• Items dismantled and reassembled several times, where the fixing holes have gone soft and the joints no longer pull tight
• Anything too large to move without a van, which narrows the buyer pool to people within a short drive

Identifying and dating yours

1. The range name is the searchable term — BILLY, MALM, KALLAX, POÄNG — and buyers search that rather than ‘bookcase’ or ‘shelving unit’, so it belongs in the title
2. The article number is printed on the assembly instructions and usually on a sticker on the underside or back panel, and it identifies the exact size and finish variant among several that share a range name
3. Say whether you still have the instructions and the fixings bag; the instructions are downloadable free, the fixings are not, and buyers ask about both before travelling

What lifts any BBQ grill, whatever the label

Barbecues are strongly seasonal and mostly sell locally, with burner and grate condition doing most of the pricing.

Working out what yours is worth

1. Light it and check every burner lights evenly
2. Lift the grates and inspect the burners for rust holes
3. Confirm the regulator and hose are present

What to state in the listing

• Fuel type, and burner count or cooking diameter
• Overall dimensions, and whether it is on wheels
• Whether a cover, thermometer, tools or side burner are included
• The state of the grates, burners and hose, described honestly

Fuel, size and brand: “Weber Spirit 3 Burner Gas BBQ, with Cover” or “Charcoal Kettle BBQ, 57cm”. Burner count is the search on gas models and diameter on kettles. Say whether a cover, tools or cylinder are included, because buyers assume they are and are disappointed otherwise.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Clean the grates and the inside of the lid properly. Burnt-on grease is the single reason a usable barbecue reads as scrap.
2. On gas models, check the burners for rust-through and the igniter for a spark, and inspect the hose and regulator for perishing.
3. Decide what happens to the gas bottle. Cylinders cannot be posted, most are exchange-only property of the supplier, and a part-full one should never be handed over casually.

When it sells best, and handing it over

Almost the whole market runs from April to July, with a short second window in late August. A clean barbecue listed in May sells within days; the same one in October may not sell at all.

Collection. Never transport a barbecue with a connected gas cylinder — disconnect it first, and if the buyer is taking a bottle, it travels upright and secured, in a ventilated space, never a sealed boot.
