Condition on WishThrift is described by the seller against five grades, and nobody inspects it on your behalf — so the description and the photographs are what you are buying on.

The checklist before you pay
A stolen bike is the real risk in this category, and a cracked frame is the expensive one. Everything else — chain, cables, tyres — is a consumable.
Run through these before money changes hands — they are the things that decide whether a BMX bike is worth what is being asked:
- High-tensile steel frames, which sell for far less
- Cracked frames at the dropouts and welds
- Bent forks and buckled wheels from hard use
- Mismatched replacement parts
And the things worth paying more for, because they hold their value:
- Recognised BMX brands with a following
- Chromoly frames over high-tensile steel
- Sealed bearing wheels and hubs

Common faults and fakes
Counterfeit carbon frames sold as premium brands are a known and genuinely dangerous problem, usually detectable on decal edges and dropout finish.
Ask for the frame serial from under the bottom bracket and check it against a stolen-bike register before you pay. Ask for close photographs of the head tube and chainstays.

Questions to ask the seller
These are the three that get asked most often about a BMX bike, and the answers tell you most of what you need:
Measure it and say. BMX is sized by top tube, not frame size, and riders know exactly what length they want.
Check for a sticker or the weight and say what you find. Full chromoly is worth substantially more than hi-ten, and riders can tell.
Inspect around the head tube and dropouts and disclose any repair. A cracked BMX frame fails suddenly under load and is not something to leave for the buyer to find.

If the listing does not already show these, ask — a seller who has the item will send them in minutes:
- The whole bike side on, drive side, against a plain background
- The cranks and bottom bracket area
- Both wheels and hubs close up
- The head tube and dropouts, plus any crack, dent, weld repair or worn part
Details to confirm before you commit
- Wheel size and top tube length, which is how BMX frames are sized
- Frame and fork material — chromoly or hi-tensile steel
- Component list, noting upgrades and their brands
- Whether the frame and forks are crack free, and any play in headset or bottom bracket

When to buy
Lifts in spring and before Christmas. Well-specified bikes with named components sell within days; entry-level department store BMXs are slow and compete on price alone.
Prices move against that cycle for a buyer: the cheapest time to buy is when sellers are listing most, not when demand peaks.
