2. The fit and factory are stamped on the back of the top button — a two or three digit number that identifies the plant

Working out what yours is worth

1. Turn it inside out and check the seam tape is fully bonded
2. Splash water on the shoulders and see whether it beads
3. Note the membrane name from the label

What to state in the listing

• Chest and length measured flat, plus the label size
• Whether it is waterproof, showerproof, or a shower-resistant fashion coat
• Whether the seams are taped, and whether it is lined
• Any peeling of the inner coating, which is the usual end-of-life fault

Brand, waterproof rating and size: “Rains Waterproof Raincoat, Size M, Taped Seams”. Named outdoor brands carry real value. If it has a millimetre hydrostatic head rating on the label, quote it — buyers who care about staying dry search for exactly that.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Run water over a sleeve and watch. If it soaks in rather than beading, the coating has gone and the coat should be described as showerproof at best.
2. Check the taped seams inside for lifting, which is where waterproof coats fail first.
3. Test the zip and any storm flap, and check the hood adjusters and cuff tabs are all present.

When it sells best, and handing it over

Lifts in autumn and again in spring. Technical outdoor brands sell year round; fashion raincoats are seasonal and compete on style.

Light and packs small, so postage is cheap. Fold rather than compress anything with a membrane, and mention it has been washed with a technical wash if you have done so.
