Seller-declared grades, sterling with an approximate US dollar equivalent at £1 ≈ $1.33 (July 2026). What each grade means.
What holds its value across Apple
- Battery health above 85% on anything with a battery, which buyers ask for by number
- The original box, cable and adapter, which matter more here than on other brands
- Higher storage tiers, which command a clear premium second-hand
- Devices still inside AppleCare, which transfers with the device
What pulls Apple resale value down
- Activation Lock still enabled, which makes the device close to worthless because it cannot be reset
- Third-party screen or battery repairs, which trigger a service warning in Settings that buyers see
- Any finance agreement outstanding, which blocks a clean transfer
- Bent chassis on laptops and tablets, usually a sign of a swollen battery
Identifying and dating yours
- The model identifier is in Settings > General > About, or on the underside of a laptop — it is what buyers search, not the marketing name
- Serial number checks against Apple’s coverage page confirm warranty status and age
- Battery health is readable in Settings and should be photographed
What lifts any AirPods, whatever the label
AirPods hold value better than most earbuds, but battery degradation still sets a hard ceiling on what an older pair is worth.
- Recent generations, particularly Pro models
- Battery still delivering close to rated listening time
- Charging case included and pairing cleanly
- All original ear tips on Pro models
And what pulls one down
- Noticeably shortened battery life, the usual failure
- A case that no longer charges both buds
- Missing ear tips on Pro models
- Counterfeit units, which buyers actively check serials for
Working out what yours is worth
- Check the serial number in Settings against Apple’s coverage tool
- Charge fully and time real listening on each bud
- Confirm the case charges both sides evenly
What to state in the listing
- Exact generation, and whether they are standard AirPods or AirPods Pro
- Whether both buds and the charging case are all included and all original
- Realistic listening time per charge from an actual test
- Whether the case supports wireless charging, and which ear tips are included for Pro models
Generation is everything: “Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Generation with Charging Case”. Buyers filter by generation and will not find a listing that just says AirPods. State plainly whether the case is included and whether it charges wirelessly, since both change the price.
Preparing and photographing it
- Charge both buds and the case fully, then time how long a bud lasts in real use. Battery degradation is the main reason used AirPods are cheap.
- Clean the mesh and the case thoroughly. This is the one category where visible earwax ends a sale instantly.
- Unpair them from your devices and remove them from Find My, then confirm the serial on the case matches the buds.
- Both buds and the case together, open, clean and well lit
- The serial number printed inside the case lid
- The charging contacts and the mesh grilles close up
- Any scuffing on the case hinge, which is where AirPods cases wear
When it sells best, and handing it over
Fast movers when priced sensibly, with a strong lift before Christmas. Values step down each time Apple releases a new generation, so there is little benefit in waiting.
Tiny and easy to post, but also easy to dispute. Photograph the exact items going into the parcel, and confirm payment has cleared before sending.
What buyers ask
Is a locked iPhone or iPad worth anything?
Very little. Activation Lock cannot be bypassed, so the device cannot be reset for a new owner. Remove the account before listing.
Does battery health affect resale value?
Substantially. Above 85% sells at the normal rate; below 80% buyers negotiate hard because a replacement is an immediate cost.
How much are Apple AirPods worth?
Roughly £52 to £195 depending on condition, against £40 to £150 for AirPods generally. The identification points above are what move a listing to the top of that range.
What the fees would take elsewhere
At the mid-range £123 for Apple AirPods, against what the commission marketplaces would deduct:
| Platform | Fee | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Poshmark | −£25 | £98 |
| eBay | −£17 | £106 |
| Mercari | −£12 | £111 |
| Etsy | −£8 | £115 |
| WishThrift | −£0 | £123 |
Seller-side rates verified 26 Jul 2026, percentages only — the per-order and processing charges those platforms add are excluded, so the real gap is wider.
