What raises the value of a sculptures

  • Signed and numbered bronze editions
  • Recognised sculptors and foundry marks
  • Original patina left undisturbed
  • Marble and stone with no repairs

What lowers it

  • Later casts and reproductions
  • Repaired breaks, particularly at thin sections
  • Polished or stripped patina on bronze
  • Resin pieces sold as bronze

How to work out what yours is worth

  1. Look for a signature, edition number and foundry mark
  2. Check for repairs at the thinnest points
  3. Weigh it — resin is far lighter than bronze

Once you have those three answers you can place your own sculptures on the table above with reasonable confidence. If it sits between two rows, price it toward the lower one — items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell bronze from resin?

Weight, mostly. Bronze is substantially heavier and cold to the touch. Resin pieces are light and warm quickly in the hand.

Does patina matter?

Considerably. Original patina is part of the work, and polishing or stripping it reduces value sharply.

What is a foundry mark?

A stamp identifying where the bronze was cast. Together with the edition number it is key evidence of authenticity.
