What holds its value across Sony

1. Camera bodies report a shutter count, and quoting it is the single most useful thing you can put in a listing for one
2. Consoles carry a model code on the underside or rear which identifies the revision, and buyers search by it
3. Photograph lens elements against a bright plain background to show whether there is fungus, haze or dust inside

What lifts any TV, whatever the label

Televisions depreciate steeply, so the useful question is not age but panel type and whether the smart platform still works properly.

• OLED and higher-end panels, which hold value best
• A screen with no burn-in, dead pixels or backlight banding
• Original stand, remote and power lead
• A smart platform still receiving app updates

And what pulls one down

• Burn-in on OLED panels from static logos
• Dead backlight zones showing as dark patches
• Missing or replaced remote, often proprietary
• Older smart platforms where apps no longer install

Working out what yours is worth

1. Display a plain white and a plain grey full-screen image to reveal panel faults
2. Confirm the remote, stand and power lead are all present
3. Note the exact model number from the rear panel

What to state in the listing

• Screen size in inches and resolution, and the exact model number
• Whether it is a smart TV, and whether the apps still receive updates
• Whether the stand, feet, screws and remote are all included
• Any dead pixels, backlight bleed, screen scratches or bezel damage

Size, resolution and model: “Samsung 55-inch 4K Smart TV UE55TU7100”. Screen size in inches is the primary search term, so it must be there. If it is not a smart TV, or the smart apps no longer update, say so — buyers assume smart features work and are annoyed to find otherwise.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Power it on and display a plain white image, then a plain black one, to reveal dead pixels, backlight bleed and clouding.
2. Find the exact model number on the rear sticker and note the screen size and resolution.
3. Locate the stand, feet, screws and remote. A television missing its stand or remote loses more value than the parts cost to replace.

When it sells best, and handing it over

Sells year round with a clear peak before Christmas and around major sporting tournaments. Large screens move faster than small ones because the saving against new is bigger.

Effectively a collection-only item: televisions are fragile, awkward and expensive to post, and courier damage claims on screens rarely succeed. Let the buyer see it powered on before they take it, which suits both of you.

What is shutter count and why do buyers ask?

It is the number of exposures a camera body has taken, and the shutter mechanism has a finite life. It is the first thing an experienced buyer asks for, and quoting it upfront gets a body sold considerably faster than describing the condition in words.

Are old PlayStation consoles worth selling?

Working ones with the original controller and cables sell steadily, and the earlier models that are no longer made have a collectors’ market. A failing optical drive is the fault that most often ends the value, so test a disc before listing.

How much is a Sony TV worth?
