What holds its value across Levi’s

• Big E red tabs (capital E, pre-1971), which are a collectors’ market in their own right
• 501s in general, and selvedge 501s in particular — check for the coloured line in the outseam when the cuff is turned
• Made in USA pieces, printed on the care label, which carry a clear premium over later overseas production
• Honest fading and whiskering on genuinely worn denim, which buyers of vintage pay MORE for rather than less

What pulls Levi’s resale value down

• Crotch blowouts and worn inner thighs, the failure that ends most vintage pairs
• Modern stretch-blend fits, which have very little second-hand value
• Re-hemmed or shortened legs, which remove the original selvedge hem collectors want
• Replaced buttons or rivets, which break the originality that carries the price

Identifying and dating yours

1. The red tab: capital E is pre-1971 and worth checking first; lowercase e is everything after
2. The fit and factory are stamped on the back of the top button — a two or three digit number that identifies the plant
3. The care label carries the country of manufacture and, on later pairs, a date code

What lifts any fleece, whatever the label

Fleece is judged on pilling and zip condition, and technical outdoor brands hold value far better than high-street versions.

• Heavy pilling and matting of the pile
• Broken or separated zips
• Thin high-street fleece

Working out what yours is worth

1. Run the zip fully and check it does not separate
2. Check the pile at the elbows and cuffs for matting
3. Note the brand and any model name from the label

What to state in the listing

• Brand, model and fleece grade or weight if stated
• Full zip, half zip or pullover
• Pit-to-pit and length laid flat
• Pile condition, and whether all zips and pockets work

Brand, weight and style: “Patagonia Synchilla Fleece, Full Zip, Size M”. Outdoor brand names do most of the work here. Say full zip, half zip or pullover, and give the grade if the label has one.

Preparing and photographing it

1. De-bobble the pile with a fabric shaver — it takes minutes and transforms how the garment photographs.
2. Check every zip, including pocket zips, and the elastic at cuffs and hem.
3. Note the weight or grade if the label states it, since outdoor brands grade their fleece.
