HP Scanners Resale Value

A used HP scanner is typically worth £21 to £89 (approximately $28 to $119), against £20 to £85 for scanners generally. HP sells more printers than anything else, and printers are the one product here worth almost nothing used. The EliteBook and ZBook business laptops are a different market entirely.

Seller-declared grades, sterling with an approximate US dollar equivalent at £1 ≈ $1.33 (July 2026). What each grade means.

What holds its value across HP

  • EliteBook and ZBook business machines, which are built for fleet use and are the best of what HP makes
  • Machines with soldered memory at the higher capacities, since a buyer cannot upgrade them later
  • Large-format and professional printers, which are genuinely expensive and retain some value
  • Docking stations and power supplies, which are model-specific and irritating to source separately

What pulls HP resale value down

  • Consumer inkjet printers, which are sold near cost because the money is in the cartridges — these are worth very little used
  • Swollen laptop batteries, which push the chassis apart and must not be shipped
  • Printers with dried or clogged print heads, which is what happens to an inkjet left unused and is often terminal
  • Machines still enrolled in a corporate management profile, which the buyer cannot remove

Identifying and dating yours

  1. The product and serial number are on a label underneath — quote them, since HP publishes the full specification against the product number
  2. For a printer, run a nozzle check and photograph the result rather than claiming it works
  3. Photograph the laptop edge-on to show the base sits flat, which rules out a swollen battery

What lifts any scanner, whatever the label

Scanners are simple and long-lived, so driver support rather than hardware condition is what limits their value.

  • Current driver support for modern operating systems
  • Higher optical resolutions
  • Film and slide scanning capability
  • Original power supply and cables

And what pulls one down

  • Discontinued drivers, which make the unit unusable
  • Dust and marks under the glass
  • Failed lamps causing banding
  • Very low resolution flatbeds

Working out what yours is worth

  1. Confirm drivers exist for current operating systems
  2. Scan a plain white sheet to reveal marks and banding
  3. Check the power supply and cable are present

What to state in the listing

  • Brand, model, and optical resolution in dpi
  • Type — flatbed, sheet-fed or film
  • Which operating systems currently have drivers
  • Whether it scans film or negatives, and what cables are included

Brand, model and type: “Epson Perfection V370 Flatbed Scanner, Film Adapter”. Say flatbed, sheet-fed or film scanner, and mention transparency or negative scanning if it has it, which is a specific and valuable search.

Preparing and photographing it

  1. Check the manufacturer’s site for current drivers and say what you find, including which operating systems are supported.
  2. Clean the glass and the lid backing and run a test scan, then photograph the result.
  3. Check the hinge and any document feeder, and gather the power supply and cable.
  1. The scanner closed, from the front
  2. The lid open, showing clean glass
  3. An actual scan it has produced
  4. The model number, power supply and cable, plus any scratch on the glass

When it sells best, and handing it over

Steady but modest year round, with a small lift in January. Film scanners sell to a specific and enthusiastic audience whenever they appear.

Lock the scan head if the unit has a transport lock — posting an unlocked scanner damages the mechanism. Double box it and say you have locked it.

What buyers ask

Are used printers worth selling?

Consumer inkjets rarely are — they are sold cheaply because the profit is in ink, and unused ones clog. Laser and large-format printers hold value much better.

Why do inkjet printers stop working after storage?

The print head dries and clogs. It is the standard fault on a stored inkjet and often cannot be cleared, so test before listing and say what you find.

How much is an HP scanner worth?

Roughly £21 to £89 depending on condition, against £20 to £85 for scanners generally. The identification points above are what move a listing to the top of that range.

What the fees would take elsewhere
