What a fair price looks like
Condition on WishThrift is described by the seller against five grades, and nobody inspects them on your behalf — so the description and the photographs are what you are buying on.

The checklist before you pay
Damp, which spreads to whatever you shelve beside it and cannot be reversed. Then edition — a later printing described loosely as a first.
Run through these before money changes hands — they are the things that decide whether paperback novels is worth what is being asked:

Questions to ask the seller
These are the three that get asked most often about paperback novels, and the answers tell you most of what you need:
Count and confirm. A complete series is worth substantially more than the same books minus one, and buyers checking will not proceed without knowing.
Photograph them lined up. Cracked spines are normal on read paperbacks and buyers accept them; unreadable ones are a different matter.
Decide in advance. Splitting a bundle usually leaves you with the unwanted remainder and more postage trips than it is worth.
Also worth establishing before you commit:
- Group by genre or author and photograph the bundle
- Check for damp odour before listing
- Identify any out-of-print titles separately
Photographs to ask for
If the listing does not already show these, ask — a seller who has the item will send them in minutes:
- The whole bundle laid out with titles and spines readable
- A stack fanned so the number of books is obvious
- The spines lined up, showing cracking or condition
- Any inscription, sticker, water mark or damaged copy
Details to confirm before you commit
- How many books, and the titles or authors included
- Overall condition, and any copy in noticeably worse shape
- Whether it is a complete series or a mixed selection
- Approximate total weight, which decides postage

When to buy
Lifts in the new year and before summer holidays. Complete series and popular authors sell within a fortnight; mixed general fiction bundles are slow and should be priced to move.
Prices move against that cycle for a buyer: the cheapest time to buy is when sellers are listing most, not when demand peaks.
Paying and collecting safely
