2. Hold the coat up and check the fill is evenly distributed

• The outer composition, especially the wool or down percentage
• Whether the hood detaches, and whether any fur trim is real or faux
• Pit-to-pit and full length from shoulder to hem
• Whether it is waterproof, showerproof or neither

1. Check the care label: if it is dry-clean only and visibly grubby, get it cleaned. A clean winter coat sells for noticeably more.

Loose in a large cotton sack, never compressed in its stuff sack. Long-term compression is the main reason used down jackets and sleeping bags lose their value.

Are small holes in a down jacket a problem?

They leak feathers and spread, but they patch well with repair tape. Photograph them and mention them — buyers mind an undisclosed hole far more than a disclosed one.
