What holds its value across Hermès

What pulls Hermès resale value down

• Corner wear and structural slouching on a Birkin or Kelly, which requires factory refurbishment and is priced in accordingly by buyers
• Missing clochette, padlock, keys, rain cover or dust bag, each of which is a separate expected component and each of which buyers ask about
• Faded or pulled silk on a scarf, where the hand-rolled hem has come undone or the colours have gone flat
• Replated or polished hardware, which alters the original finish and is treated as a fault rather than a restoration

Identifying and dating yours

1. A blind stamp gives the year of manufacture, usually on the strap or under the front flap, and buyers use it to date the bag before anything else
2. Scarves carry the designer’s signature printed within the design itself and a hand-rolled hem which should be rolled towards the front
3. Photograph the clochette, padlock and keys together with the bag, since a listing without them raises an immediate question

What lifts any suit, whatever the label

Suits sell modestly unless the cloth and construction are genuinely good, which most buyers can assess from a few details.

• Recognised cloth mills named on the label
• Generous inlay allowing future alteration
• Matching trousers with unworn seat and hems

• Fused construction that has bubbled at the lapel

Working out what yours is worth

1. Pinch the lapel to feel whether there is a floating canvas layer
2. Hold it to the light to check for moth holes
3. Measure the chest, shoulder and inseam rather than trusting the label

What to state in the listing

• Jacket shoulders, chest, sleeve and length
• Trouser waist, inside leg and rise, and whether hemmed or with turn-up allowance
• Fabric composition and whether it is two or three piece
• Lining condition, and any alterations already made

Fabric, colour and both sizes: “Wool Two Piece Suit, Charcoal, Jacket 40R Trousers W34 L31”. Give both sizes in the title, because a suit that fits the chest but not the leg is no use. Say two-piece or three-piece explicitly.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Measure the jacket shoulders, chest and length, and the trouser waist, inside leg and rise.
2. Check whether the trousers have been taken up or let out, and whether there is turn-up allowance left.
3. Inspect the lining, the crotch seam and the seat, and have it dry-cleaned if it looks tired.

When it sells best, and handing it over

Lifts around wedding season in spring and summer, interview periods in autumn, and before Christmas. Classic colours sell steadily; fashion cuts date quickly.

Post in a garment bag or fold carefully with tissue. Suits arrive looking cheap if crushed, and that undermines the price you agreed.

What buyers ask

Do Hermès bags really sell for more than they cost new?

Standard-leather Birkin and Kelly bags frequently do, because retail supply is allocated rather than open. That is not true of the rest of the house, and it is not a guarantee — condition, leather and hardware still decide the number.

Are Hermès scarves worth selling individually?

Yes. Carres are collected by design name and season, and a well-kept scarf with an intact hand-rolled hem has a genuine market of its own. Name the design in your listing rather than describing the colours.

How much is an Hermès suit worth?
