Is an old AV receiver still useful?

As an amplifier, usually yes for many years. The limitation is video pass-through and streaming features, which date long before the amplification does.

Why does my amplifier crackle when I turn the volume?

Almost always dirty contacts in the potentiometer rather than a fault. Say so honestly — buyers who know hi-fi expect it on older units and it is usually cleanable.
