What raises the value of a car tyres

  • Tread depth well above the legal minimum
  • Manufacture date within the last few years
  • Matching sets of four in the same size
  • Recognised brands with no repairs

What lowers it

  • Tread near or below the legal minimum
  • Tyres more than several years old, whatever the tread
  • Sidewall damage, bulges or cracking
  • Previous puncture repairs

How to work out what yours is worth

  1. Measure the tread depth and state it in millimetres
  2. Read the four-digit date code on the sidewall
  3. Photograph the sidewall including size and date

Once you have those three answers you can place your own car tyres on the table above with reasonable confidence. If it sits between two rows, price it toward the lower one — items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully.

Frequently asked questions

How old is too old for a tyre?

Rubber degrades with age regardless of tread. The four-digit date code on the sidewall gives the week and year of manufacture — quote it.

Can I sell tyres with low tread?

Tread below the legal minimum should not be sold for road use. State the actual depth in millimetres rather than describing it vaguely.

Do sidewall bulges matter?

They are a serious safety defect indicating internal damage. Such a tyre should be scrapped, not sold.
