Cello Resale Value

A used cello typically sells for between £150 and £800, with most changing hands around £475. Cellos range from factory student instruments to fine older ones, and the difference in value is enormous.

The short version

  • Typical range: £150 – £800
  • Biggest single factor: condition — see the table below
  • Category: Music & Instruments
  • Cost to sell on WishThrift: nothing, at any price

What a used cello is worth by condition

Condition does more to the price than anything else. These figures are worked from the top of the range for cellos, so treat them as a starting point and adjust for the specifics of yours.

ConditionTypical priceWhat it means
New with Tags£800Unused, tags or seals intact
Like New£680Barely used, no visible wear
Good£520Light signs of use, complete and working
Fair£360Heavily used, or a described fault or missing part
For Parts£200Not working or incomplete, sold as seen

These are the five grades WishThrift listings use, and sellers set the grade themselves — see what each condition grade means. Figures are shown in pounds as a reference point. On WishThrift prices display in your own currency, and sellers set their own asking price.

What raises the value of a cello

  • Carved solid tops rather than laminate
  • Older instruments with documented origin
  • Sound post and bridge correctly fitted
  • Case and bow included, particularly a good bow

What lowers it

  • Laminate student instruments, worth much less
  • Open seams and cracks in the top
  • Warped necks and collapsed bridges
  • Missing or warped bows

How to work out what yours is worth

  1. Look through the f-hole for a label and note it
  2. Check the seams around the edges for openings
  3. Confirm the sound post is standing and the bridge straight

Once you have those three answers you can place your own cello on the table above with reasonable confidence. If it sits between two rows, price it toward the lower one — items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a cello is valuable?

Whether the top is carved or laminated, and any label inside. Genuinely old instruments should be assessed by a specialist.

Are labels inside cellos reliable?

Often not — many are aspirational copies. Report what the label says without claiming it is a genuine attribution.

How should a cello be transported?

In a hard case, and never posted casually. Most sell as local collection because of the risk in transit.
