1. The model number is on the nameplate on the tool body, and the date code stamped beside it gives the year and week it was made
2. Brushless tools carry the XR badge and the word brushless printed on the housing — photograph it, because it changes the price materially
3. Battery packs have their capacity in amp-hours printed on the label, and many have a charge-state button worth pressing on camera

What lifts any compressor, whatever the label

Compressors are judged on the tank and the pump, and a corroded tank is a genuine safety issue rather than cosmetic.

• Tanks with no external corrosion or pitting
• Pumps building to full pressure and holding
• Recognised brands with parts available
• Complete with hose, gauges and fittings

• Corroded or pitted tanks, a safety risk
• Pumps that will not reach rated pressure
• Leaking tank drain valves

Working out what yours is worth

1. Run it up to pressure and check it holds with the motor off
2. Inspect the tank underneath for corrosion
3. Open the drain valve and check for water and rust

What to state in the listing

• Tank capacity in litres and maximum pressure
• Air delivery in CFM or litres per minute, which is what tools actually need
• Belt or direct drive, and motor power and supply
• Tank age, and whether it has been drained regularly

Tank size, pressure and output: “50L Air Compressor, 8 Bar, 9.6 CFM, Belt Drive”. Tank litres and air delivery are the searches, since buyers match them to a tool’s requirement. Belt drive versus direct drive is a real distinction on quality and noise.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Drain the tank completely through the bottom valve and note what comes out. Rusty water indicates internal corrosion.
2. Check the tank exterior for rust, dents and any pitting, especially around the base and seams.
3. Run it and time how long it takes to reach cut-out pressure, and check it holds pressure with the motor off.

Steady year round with a spring lift. Larger belt-drive machines sell to trade buyers whenever they appear.

Very heavy, so collection is normal. Drain the tank fully before it moves, both for weight and so the buyer can inspect it. Never transport a pressurised tank.

How do I describe battery condition honestly?
