What holds its value across Sony

What pulls Sony resale value down

• A high shutter count on a camera body, which is the mechanical life of the shutter and is the first number a buyer asks for
• Perished or flaking earpads on the headphones, which are replaceable but which buyers price down for heavily
• Consoles with a failing optical drive, which is the standard failure and turns the machine into a download-only device
• Fungus in lens elements, which spreads, etches the coating permanently and makes a lens unsellable rather than merely cheaper

Identifying and dating yours

1. Camera bodies report a shutter count, and quoting it is the single most useful thing you can put in a listing for one
2. Consoles carry a model code on the underside or rear which identifies the revision, and buyers search by it
3. Photograph lens elements against a bright plain background to show whether there is fungus, haze or dust inside

What lifts any PS5, whatever the label

The console market moves in a narrow band, so most of the spread is about which revision you have and how complete the package is.

• Both controllers, cables and the original box
• Disc edition, which consistently sells for more than the digital version
• Recent revisions with the lighter, quieter chassis
• Any bundled games still in their cases

And what pulls one down

• Missing HDMI or power cables, which buyers must replace immediately
• A noisy or dust-clogged fan, easily heard on a video call before sale
• Console-only sales with no controller
• Visible discolouration on the white panels

Working out what yours is worth

1. Check the model number on the sticker underneath
2. Count what you actually still have: controllers, cables, box, games
3. Compare against sold listings for the same edition and revision

What to state in the listing

• Disc Edition or Digital Edition, and the model revision if you know it
• Exactly what is included: stand, screw, power cable, HDMI, controllers, games
• Whether the controller has any stick drift
• Whether the console has been opened, repaired or re-pasted

Edition and what is included: “PS5 Disc Edition with Controller and All Cables”. Disc versus Digital is the primary filter and the price difference is substantial, so it must be in the title. If you are including games or a second controller, put that in too — bundles genuinely sell faster.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Gather everything: power cable, HDMI, base stand and screw, controller and its USB cable. Missing parts cost more in price than they do to replace.
2. Factory reset the console and deactivate it as your primary PS5, so the buyer can sign in with their own account.
3. Note whether it is the Disc or Digital Edition, and blow the dust out of the vents.

When it sells best, and handing it over

Consistently strong, with a sharp lift from November into December. Bundles with extra controllers or popular games sell noticeably faster than bare consoles.

Heavy and awkward but postable if well boxed — the original box is ideal if you kept it. Local collection lets the buyer see it boot and test the controller, which removes most disputes on a console sale.

What is shutter count and why do buyers ask?

It is the number of exposures a camera body has taken, and the shutter mechanism has a finite life. It is the first thing an experienced buyer asks for, and quoting it upfront gets a body sold considerably faster than describing the condition in words.

Are old PlayStation consoles worth selling?

Working ones with the original controller and cables sell steadily, and the earlier models that are no longer made have a collectors’ market. A failing optical drive is the fault that most often ends the value, so test a disc before listing.
