What holds its value across HP

• EliteBook and ZBook business machines, which are built for fleet use and are the best of what HP makes
• Machines with soldered memory at the higher capacities, since a buyer cannot upgrade them later
• Large-format and professional printers, which are genuinely expensive and retain some value
• Docking stations and power supplies, which are model-specific and irritating to source separately

What pulls HP resale value down

• Consumer inkjet printers, which are sold near cost because the money is in the cartridges — these are worth very little used
• Swollen laptop batteries, which push the chassis apart and must not be shipped
• Printers with dried or clogged print heads, which is what happens to an inkjet left unused and is often terminal
• Machines still enrolled in a corporate management profile, which the buyer cannot remove

Identifying and dating yours

1. The product and serial number are on a label underneath — quote them, since HP publishes the full specification against the product number
2. For a printer, run a nozzle check and photograph the result rather than claiming it works
3. Photograph the laptop edge-on to show the base sits flat, which rules out a swollen battery

What lifts any Chromebook, whatever the label

What to state in the listing

• Brand, model, screen size and whether the screen is touch
• Processor, RAM and storage
• Auto-update expiry date from ChromeOS settings
• Real battery life, and whether the original charger is included

Brand, size and update date: “Acer Chromebook 314, 14in, 4GB/64GB, Updates to 2029”. Putting the auto-update expiry in the title is unusual and immediately credible — buyers who know Chromebooks look for it first.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Find the auto-update expiry date in Settings under About ChromeOS. This is the single most important detail.
2. Note the processor, RAM, storage and screen size, and whether the screen is touch.
3. Powerwash the device to remove your account, and charge it to test real battery life.

Strong lift in August and September for the school year, and before Christmas. Machines with years of updates left sell within days.

Are used printers worth selling?

Consumer inkjets rarely are — they are sold cheaply because the profit is in ink, and unused ones clog. Laser and large-format printers hold value much better.

Why do inkjet printers stop working after storage?

The print head dries and clogs. It is the standard fault on a stored inkjet and often cannot be cleared, so test before listing and say what you find.
