Used Nikon Cameras and Photography: Prices and Sizing

Used Nikon cameras and photography gear typically sell for $21 to $989 (about £16 to £735) depending on the camera and its condition. Camera equipment sells to people who know precisely what they want, which makes the specification the listing. The mount, the format and the shutter count matter more than the brand name, and glass in good condition holds value far better than bodies do.

Mounts, formats and compatibility on Nikon cameras and photography gear

Nikon’s reflex mount ran from 1959 until the mirrorless system arrived, which makes it one of the longest-lived mounts in photography, but compatibility within it is uneven: some older lenses need a body with a focus motor, and some need metering the body no longer offers.

  • DSLR and mirrorless bodies carry the volume and are priced on shutter count, sensor format and the age of the autofocus system
  • Lenses are the better store of value, and whether one carries its own focus motor decides which bodies it works on

What to check before you buy

Say whether a lens has a built-in focus motor and whether it covers full frame or only a cropped sensor. Entry-level bodies have no motor in the body, so a screw-driven lens on one of them focuses only by hand.

For the checks that apply to any used cameras and photography gear regardless of the maker, see the guide to buying used cameras and photography gear.

What you keep when you sell

On a typical $505 Nikon camera, a marketplace charging 20% takes $101, one charging 13.6% takes $69 and one charging 10% takes $51. WishThrift charges neither side, so you keep the whole $505.

Listing your Nikon cameras and photography gear

  • Photograph the glass properly. One well-lit shot through each element does more for a lens listing than any number of pictures of the barrel
  • Include sample images taken with the equipment. It is the most persuasive thing you can add and almost nobody does it

Questions

Will an old lens autofocus on a modern body?

Only if one of the two has a motor. Older designs were driven by a motor in the body, which cheaper current bodies do not have, so the lens becomes manual focus. Say which type yours is in the listing, because a buyer cannot tell from a photograph of the front element.

How much is used Nikon cameras and photography gear worth?

Roughly $21 to $989 depending on the item and its condition. The table above breaks it down piece by piece, and each row links to a full value guide for that item.
