What holds its value across Rab

• Microlight and Neutrino down jackets, which are the models most people know the brand by and which sell readily
• Down that still lofts fully when shaken, since fill power is the entire argument for the price
• Ascent and other four-season sleeping bags, which are expensive new and sell steadily to people planning specific trips
• Kit with the original stuff sack and, for bags, the cotton storage sack, which is how down is meant to be kept

What pulls Rab resale value down

• Down that has lost loft from being stored compressed, which is the commonest damage and is largely irreversible
• Tears and burns in the Pertex shell, which is very light fabric and is easily holed by a stove or a rock
• Down migration and leaking baffles, where feathers work through the shell and the insulation goes patchy
• Bags washed in ordinary detergent, which strips the natural oils from down and flattens it permanently

Identifying and dating yours

1. Shake the item out and photograph it from the side, so the loft is visible — this is the shot buyers want and its absence stalls the sale
2. Photograph the shell under raking light to show any pinholes or repairs, which are easy to miss and which buyers find later
3. The label gives the fill power and weight; both are search terms and both belong in the listing

What lifts any tent, whatever the label

Tents look fine folded and fail in the field, so buyers care about waterproofing and poles far more than cosmetic condition.

Working out what yours is worth

1. Pitch it fully in the garden before listing
2. Check the flysheet coating for flaking on the inside
3. Flex every pole section and check the shock cord tension

What to state in the listing

• Capacity in persons, and the actual pitched dimensions
• Brand, model and season rating
• Whether all poles, pegs and guy lines are present
• Waterproof rating if known, and the condition of seams, zips and groundsheet

Capacity, brand and season rating: “Vango 4 Man Tent, 3 Season, Complete with Poles and Pegs”. Capacity is the primary search. “Complete with poles and pegs” is worth stating explicitly, because missing poles are the standard problem with used tents.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Pitch it in a garden or park. It confirms completeness, reveals damage, and gives you the photograph that sells it.
2. Count the poles and pegs against the manual, and check the guy lines are all present.
3. Check the seams and the groundsheet for leaks, and make sure it is bone dry before packing — a damp tent grows mould in the bag.

When it sells best, and handing it over

Sharply seasonal: April through August, peaking before summer holidays and festivals. A tent listed in November sells slowly and cheaply.

Packs small and posts easily, which is unusual for camping gear. Weigh the packed bag before quoting, since family tents are heavier than they look.

What buyers ask

How should down kit be stored?

Loose in a large cotton sack, never compressed in its stuff sack. Long-term compression is the main reason used down jackets and sleeping bags lose their value.

Are small holes in a down jacket a problem?

They leak feathers and spread, but they patch well with repair tape. Photograph them and mention them — buyers mind an undisclosed hole far more than a disclosed one.

How much is a Rab tent worth?

Roughly £40 to £270 depending on condition, against £30 to £200 for tents generally. The identification points above are what move a listing to the top of that range.
