Large appliances are the one place where a faulty item can cost you money to sell. Weigh whether the collection is worth the buyer’s trip before listing: a dead washing machine or fridge freezer has real scrap and parts value, but only to someone with a van. Small appliances are the opposite — kettles, toasters and coffee machines are cheap to repair, and descaling or a new seal often turns a ‘broken’ one back into a working sale.

Before you write it off

Descale before you decide. Kettles, coffee machines and steam appliances that have stopped or run slow are far more often limescaled than broken, and a cycle of descaler resolves it. On washing machines and dishwashers, check the filter and the drain pump for a blockage — a machine that will not drain is frequently holding a coin or a hairgrip rather than a dead pump.

What a defect actually costs you

Is a broken washing machine or fridge worth selling?

It has genuine parts and scrap value, but only to a buyer with a van, so treat it as a collection-only sale and price it accordingly. Say whether it can be wheeled out and whether there is a lift or stairs.

Should I repair a small appliance before listing it?

Descale it and clean it, certainly — that alone turns a lot of ‘broken’ kettles and coffee machines back into working ones. Beyond that, a repair on a low-value appliance rarely pays for itself.
