What a used bookshelf is worth by condition
Condition does more to the price than anything else. These figures are worked from the top of the range for bookshelfs, so treat them as a starting point and adjust for the specifics of yours.
| Condition | Typical price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| New with Tags | £120 | Unused, tags or seals intact |
| Like New | £102 | Barely used, no visible wear |
| Good | £78 | Light signs of use, complete and working |
| Fair | £54 | Heavily used, or a described fault or missing part |
| For Parts | £30 | Not working or incomplete, sold as seen |
These are the five grades WishThrift listings use, and sellers set the grade themselves — see what each condition grade means. Figures are shown in pounds as a reference point. On WishThrift prices display in your own currency, and sellers set their own asking price.
What raises the value of a bookshelf
- Solid wood construction with thick shelves
- Adjustable shelf pins and all fittings present
- Recognised modular and mid-century systems
- A back panel that is intact and square
What lowers it
- Sagging shelves under book weight
- Missing shelf pins and fixings
- Torn or missing hardboard backs
- Tall units with no wall-fixing bracket
How to work out what yours is worth
- Sight along each shelf for sag
- Count the shelf pins and fixings
- Measure the height, width and depth
Once you have those three answers you can place your own bookshelf on the table above with reasonable confidence. If it sits between two rows, price it toward the lower one — items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully.

Frequently asked questions
Are used bookshelves worth selling?
Solid wood and recognised modular systems sell well. Basic particleboard shelving sells for very little, though it still moves quickly when cheap.
Why do shelves sag?
Thin particleboard under sustained book weight. Once a shelf has bowed it does not recover, and buyers spot it immediately.
Should I include the wall bracket?
Yes, and mention it. Tall units need anchoring, and a missing bracket is a safety issue the buyer has to solve.
