What a fair price looks like
Condition on WishThrift is described by the seller against five grades, and nobody inspects it on your behalf — so the description and the photographs are what you are buying on.

The checklist before you pay
Paperwork above everything. A vehicle without a matching registration document, or with outstanding finance, is a problem you inherit.
Run through these before money changes hands — they are the things that decide whether a moped is worth what is being asked:
- Worn drive belts and rollers
- Frame and exhaust corrosion
- Missing keys and paperwork
- Crash damage and cracked panels
And the things worth paying more for, because they hold their value:
- Service history with recent belt and rollers
- Long remaining test where applicable
- Both keys and complete documentation
- Clean frame with no corrosion
Common faults and fakes
Cloned plates and altered documents are the serious end of this category, and mileage discrepancies the common end.
Check the registration document against the vehicle’s own numbers, run a history check for finance and write-off markers, and never pay a deposit before you have seen the vehicle and the paperwork together.

Questions to ask the seller
These are the three that get asked most often about a moped, and the answers tell you most of what you need:
Test it properly after standing overnight and answer honestly. This is where used mopeds most often disappoint.
State the engine capacity and let the buyer check their own entitlement. Do not give licensing advice you are not sure of.
List anything you know. Buyers of budget machines expect some work and respect a seller who is upfront about it.
Also worth establishing before you commit:
- Check when the belt and rollers were last replaced
- Inspect the frame under the panels for corrosion
- Confirm both keys and all documents are present
Photographs to ask for
If the listing does not already show these, ask — a seller who has the item will send them in minutes:
- Both sides in daylight, whole machine in frame
- The clocks showing mileage
- The engine and exhaust area, showing any corrosion
- The tyres and brakes, plus any scrape or damaged panel
Details to confirm before you commit
- Make, model, engine capacity in cc, year and mileage
- MOT expiry and service history
- Whether it starts reliably from cold
- Tyre, brake and bodywork condition, plus any corrosion

When to buy
Seasonal, strongest from March to August with a lift in September as students start terms. Cheap reliable machines sell quickly in season.
Prices move against that cycle for a buyer: the cheapest time to buy is when sellers are listing most, not when demand peaks.
Paying and collecting safely
