Condition on WishThrift is described by the seller against five grades, and nobody inspects them on your behalf — so the description and the photographs are what you are buying on.

The checklist before you pay
Missing pieces, which turn a set into a parts lot, and sun-yellowed plastic that photographs far better than it looks.
Run through these before money changes hands — they are the things that decide whether model kits is worth what is being asked:

- Missing sprues and instructions

Common faults and fakes
Counterfeit trading cards and building bricks are widespread. On cards, print dots and edge layering give it away; on bricks, the clutch and the moulding marks.
Ask for a piece count against the official parts list, for the set number, and for the figures photographed together in daylight rather than under warm light.

Questions to ask the seller
These are the three that get asked most often about model kits, and the answers tell you most of what you need:
Answer precisely. Sealed means the inner bags are unopened, not that the box has been closed again. Modellers will check on arrival and the distinction is worth real money.
Photograph the sheet. Decals yellow and go brittle with age, and it is the most common reason an otherwise complete old kit disappoints.
Check each sprue and say. A started kit still sells well to modellers who wanted a spares donor — but only when it is described as started.
Also worth establishing before you commit:
- Confirm every sprue is present and still bagged
- Check the decal sheet for yellowing
- Note the kit number and scale
Photographs to ask for
If the listing does not already show these, ask — a seller who has the item will send them in minutes:
- The box art straight on, filling the frame
- The contents in the box as they are, showing whether bags are sealed
- The decal sheet flat, close enough to see whether it has yellowed
- The instruction sheet, plus the box corners and any damage
Details to confirm before you commit
- Manufacturer, kit number and subject
- Scale, stated as a ratio
- Whether sealed, opened but complete, started, or part-built
- Whether the decals and instructions are present, and the decal condition

When to buy
Steady year-round with a lift before Christmas. Out-of-production kits from established manufacturers sell within days when correctly titled; current-production kits compete with retail and move slower.
Prices move against that cycle for a buyer: the cheapest time to buy is when sellers are listing most, not when demand peaks.
