Buying a Used Treadmill: What to Check

A fair price for a treadmill in good condition is around £52 to £260 (approximately $69 to $346), against £80 to £400 across the full condition range. Treadmills are heavy, hard to move and often bought on impulse, which keeps the second-hand market well supplied and prices low.

What a fair price looks like

Condition on WishThrift is described by the seller against five grades, and nobody inspects it on your behalf — so the description and the photographs are what you are buying on.

ConditionTypicalWhat it means
New with Tags£400 (~$533)Unused, tags or seals intact
Like New£340 (~$453)Barely used, no visible wear
Good£260 (~$346)Light signs of use, complete and working
Fair£180 (~$240)Heavily used, or a described fault or missing part
For Parts£100 (~$133)Not working or incomplete, sold as seen

Sterling guide ranges with an approximate US dollar equivalent at £1 ≈ $1.33 (July 2026). Sellers set their own asking price; these are a starting point for judging an offer. All five grades explained.

The checklist before you pay

Getting it home — large gym equipment is a collection sale and usually needs two people and a van. On boards and hulls, water ingress that has already softened the core.

Run through these before money changes hands — they are the things that decide whether a treadmill is worth what is being asked:

  • Worn or slipping belts and grooved decks
  • Motors that struggle or smell hot under load
  • Non-folding commercial frames that are very hard to move
  • Dead consoles, which often cannot be replaced

And the things worth paying more for, because they hold their value:

  • Higher motor power ratings for sustained running
  • Belt and deck with even wear and correct tension
  • Folding frames, which are far easier to move
  • Console and heart rate features all working

Common faults and fakes

Counterfeit premium racquets and golf clubs exist and typically show in the serial markings and the finish quality on the head.

Ask for the weight and dimensions before agreeing collection. On boards, ask the seller to tap along the deck and say whether the tone changes.

WishThrift does not authenticate, inspect or grade anything, and no marketplace check replaces your own. If a seller will not answer a direct question about condition or origin, that is the answer.

Questions to ask the seller

These are the three that get asked most often about a treadmill, and the answers tell you most of what you need:

“How heavy is it and can I move it alone?”

Give the weight and answer plainly. Most treadmills need two people and a van, and a buyer who arrives alone in a hatchback is a wasted afternoon for both of you.

“Does the belt slip?”

Test it at running speed, not walking. Belt slip under load is the classic used-treadmill fault and it will be found immediately.

“Will it fit through a normal door?”

Measure it. If it does not fold and it will not fit, say so — the buyer may still want it but they need to plan.

Also worth establishing before you commit:

  1. Run it at walking and running speed and listen to the motor
  2. Check belt tension and look for wear down the centre
  3. Measure it folded and unfolded, and be honest about weight

Photographs to ask for

If the listing does not already show these, ask — a seller who has the item will send them in minutes:

  1. The treadmill assembled, side on, showing the whole deck
  2. The console lit and running, with the speed visible
  3. The belt surface close up, showing centre wear
  4. Folded, if it folds, with dimensions clear

Details to confirm before you commit

  • Brand, model, and maximum speed and incline
  • Assembled and folded dimensions, plus approximate weight
  • Which floor it is on and whether there are stairs
  • Belt condition and whether the motor runs quietly under load

When to buy

Sharply seasonal. January is by far the strongest month, with a secondary lift in autumn. Selling one in June typically means accepting a much lower price or waiting.

Prices move against that cycle for a buyer: the cheapest time to buy is when sellers are listing most, not when demand peaks.

Paying and collecting safely

WishThrift does not process payments, hold funds or offer buyer protection — you agree the price and the method with the seller directly, which is what keeps the platform free on both sides. Meet somewhere public where you can, inspect before you pay, and keep the conversation on the site so there is a record of what was agreed. Be wary of any seller who wants to move the conversation elsewhere before you have agreed anything.

Selling one instead?

If you already have a treadmill sitting unused, it is free to list and there is no commission — the price you agree is the amount you keep. Read how to sell treadmill for what to photograph and how to price, or what treadmill is worth at each condition grade.

Frequently asked questions

What should I pay for a used treadmill?

Around £52 to £260 in good condition, more for barely-used examples and less for anything with a described fault. Compare against the seller’s photographs rather than the grade alone.

How do I check a treadmill before buying?

Ask for the weight and dimensions before agreeing collection. On boards, ask the seller to tap along the deck and say whether the tone changes.

Is buying a treadmill second hand safe?

Yes, with the ordinary care any private sale needs. WishThrift does not authenticate, inspect or hold funds, so inspect before you pay where you can, meet somewhere public, and keep the conversation on the site. Getting it home — large gym equipment is a collection sale and usually needs two people and a van. On boards and hulls, water ingress that has already softened the core.
