• Faded or pulled silk on a scarf, where the hand-rolled hem has come undone or the colours have gone flat
• Replated or polished hardware, which alters the original finish and is treated as a fault rather than a restoration

Identifying and dating yours

1. A blind stamp gives the year of manufacture, usually on the strap or under the front flap, and buyers use it to date the bag before anything else
2. Scarves carry the designer’s signature printed within the design itself and a hand-rolled hem which should be rolled towards the front
3. Photograph the clochette, padlock and keys together with the bag, since a listing without them raises an immediate question

What lifts any purse, whatever the label

Purses are small, easy to post and hold value well at the designer end where the entry price to a brand is low.

2. Inspect the edge paint on every seam
3. Photograph the interior and coin section

What to state in the listing

• Dimensions closed, and material
• Number of card slots, note sections and whether there is a coin compartment
• Closure type, and confirmation it fastens securely
• Condition of the lining, corners and clasp

Brand, material and type: “Leather Purse with Coin Section, Navy” or “Zip Around Purse, 12 Card Slots”. Say whether it has a separate coin compartment — it is one of the main reasons people choose a particular purse and it is rarely mentioned.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Open and close the clasp or zip a dozen times and check it holds firmly every time.
2. Turn out the lining and check for coin marks, pen marks and torn seams.
3. Clean the exterior gently and check the corners, which wear through first on a purse carried inside a bag.

Steady year round with a strong lift before Christmas and Mother’s Day. Branded leather purses sell quickly in those windows.

Very cheap to post. Use a padded envelope, a tracked service, and check every compartment twice for anything left inside before you seal it.

What buyers ask

Do Hermès bags really sell for more than they cost new?

Standard-leather Birkin and Kelly bags frequently do, because retail supply is allocated rather than open. That is not true of the rest of the house, and it is not a guarantee — condition, leather and hardware still decide the number.

Are Hermès scarves worth selling individually?

Yes. Carres are collected by design name and season, and a well-kept scarf with an intact hand-rolled hem has a genuine market of its own. Name the design in your listing rather than describing the colours.
