Working out what yours is worth

1. Check the shutter count in menus or with free software
2. Photograph a plain white wall at a narrow aperture to reveal sensor dust
3. Note the exact mount and whether it is still supported

• Exact body model, sensor size and lens mount
• Shutter actuation count
• Whether a lens is included, and which
• Batteries, charger, cards and any accessories, plus sensor and screen condition

Body and mount, plus lens status: “Sony A7 III Body Only, E-Mount, 18k Shutter Count”. Mount is critical because lenses do not cross systems. Low shutter counts are a real selling point and belong in the title where the number is good.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Find the shutter actuation count from a recent image’s metadata using a free reader.
2. Photograph a plain bright surface at a small aperture to check for sensor dust, and clean it if needed.
3. Test autofocus, the electronic viewfinder, the screen articulation, both card slots and every dial.

It is the number of exposures a camera body has taken, and the shutter mechanism has a finite life. It is the first thing an experienced buyer asks for, and quoting it upfront gets a body sold considerably faster than describing the condition in words.

Are old PlayStation consoles worth selling?

Working ones with the original controller and cables sell steadily, and the earlier models that are no longer made have a collectors’ market. A failing optical drive is the fault that most often ends the value, so test a disc before listing.
