What a fair price looks like
Condition on WishThrift is described by the seller against five grades, and nobody inspects them on your behalf — so the description and the photographs are what you are buying on.

The checklist before you pay
Damp, which spreads to whatever you shelve beside it and cannot be reversed. Then edition — a later printing described loosely as a first.
Run through these before money changes hands — they are the things that decide whether vintage books is worth what is being asked:
- Foxing, damp staining and mould
- Cracked hinges and detached boards
- Missing plates and maps, often removed for framing
- Common titles printed in very large numbers
And the things worth paying more for, because they hold their value:
- Decorative bindings and illustrated plates
- Tight bindings with sound hinges
- Titles with an established collector interest
- Complete sets and matched volumes
Common faults and fakes
Book-club editions and later printings sold as firsts, usually without intent. The copyright page settles it.

Questions to ask the seller
These are the three that get asked most often about vintage books, and the answers tell you most of what you need:
Answer honestly. Most old books are not scarce, and saying so while pricing it as an attractive reading or display copy earns more trust than an inflated claim.
Count them against any list of illustrations. Missing plates are common in old illustrated books because they were removed and framed, and it materially affects value.
Photograph the page edges and a typical page. Foxing is nearly universal in books of a certain age and buyers expect it when it is shown.
Also worth establishing before you commit:
- Open the covers and check the hinges for cracking
- Count the illustrated plates against the list of illustrations
- Smell the pages — musty odour indicates damp storage

If the listing does not already show these, ask — a seller who has the item will send them in minutes:
- The book closed, front board and spine
- The title and copyright pages
- The hinges and board corners
- Any foxing, damp stain, inscription or loose page

When to buy
Steady to collectors and decorators year round. Attractive decorative bindings sell reliably; ordinary old reprints in poor condition are slow at any price.
Prices move against that cycle for a buyer: the cheapest time to buy is when sellers are listing most, not when demand peaks.
