What a fair price looks like
Condition on WishThrift is described by the seller against five grades, and nobody inspects it on your behalf — so the description and the photographs are what you are buying on.

The checklist before you pay
A stolen bike is the real risk in this category, and a cracked frame is the expensive one. Everything else — chain, cables, tyres — is a consumable.
Run through these before money changes hands — they are the things that decide whether a hybrid bike is worth what is being asked:
- Worn drivetrains and stretched chains
- Seized seatposts, common on commuter bikes
- Rust from being stored outside
- Missing mudguards on a bike sold as a commuter
And the things worth paying more for, because they hold their value:
- Mudguards, rack and lights already fitted
- Puncture-resistant tyres in good condition
- Reliable, serviceable gearing
- Comfortable upright geometry in a common size
Common faults and fakes
Counterfeit carbon frames sold as premium brands are a known and genuinely dangerous problem, usually detectable on decal edges and dropout finish.
Ask for the frame serial from under the bottom bracket and check it against a stolen-bike register before you pay. Ask for close photographs of the head tube and chainstays.

Questions to ask the seller
These are the three that get asked most often about a hybrid bike, and the answers tell you most of what you need:
Check the frame for eyelets and say. Commuters need both and a frame without mounts is a much less useful bike to them.
Look at the chainring and cassette range and describe it honestly. A commuter in a hilly area cares more about this than about weight.
Say which, and whether hydraulic or cable. Disc brakes are a genuine selling point for year-round riding.
Also worth establishing before you commit:
- Check the chain for stretch and the rims for wear
- Try to move the seatpost to confirm it is not seized
- List the frame size and every fitting included
Photographs to ask for
If the listing does not already show these, ask — a seller who has the item will send them in minutes:
- The whole bike side on, drive side
- The drivetrain and rear derailleur
- The frame showing mudguard and rack mounting points
- The tyres, brakes and any rust or wear
Details to confirm before you commit
- Frame size and rider height range, and wheel size
- Frame material, gearing range and number of speeds
- Brake type: rim or disc, and whether hydraulic
- Whether mudguards, rack, lights or kickstand are fitted or mountable

When to buy
Strongest March to September, with a commuter lift each September. Hybrids sell steadily because they suit the largest pool of casual riders.
Prices move against that cycle for a buyer: the cheapest time to buy is when sellers are listing most, not when demand peaks.
