Condition on WishThrift is described by the seller against five grades, and nobody inspects it on your behalf — so the description and the photographs are what you are buying on.

The checklist before you pay
A stolen bike is the real risk in this category, and a cracked frame is the expensive one. Everything else — chain, cables, tyres — is a consumable.
Run through these before money changes hands — they are the things that decide whether a kids bike is worth what is being asked:

Common faults and fakes
Counterfeit carbon frames sold as premium brands are a known and genuinely dangerous problem, usually detectable on decal edges and dropout finish.
Ask for the frame serial from under the bottom bracket and check it against a stolen-bike register before you pay. Ask for close photographs of the head tube and chainstays.

Questions to ask the seller
These are the three that get asked most often about a kids bike, and the answers tell you most of what you need:
Give the wheel size and the height range rather than an age alone. Children of the same age vary enormously and inside leg is what actually decides fit.
Check the lever reach and say whether it is adjustable. Many adult-designed levers are too far for small hands and it is a real safety point.
Say clearly. Parents buying a first bike usually need them, and matching aftermarket ones to a specific frame is fiddly.
Also worth establishing before you commit:
- State the wheel size in inches, which is how parents shop
- Check both brakes work and are reachable
- Spin the wheels and cranks for smooth bearings

- The whole bike side on, clean, against a plain background
- The wheels with the size marking on the tyre wall visible
- Both brakes and the drivetrain
- Any rust, scuff, torn saddle or missing part such as stabilisers

- Wheel diameter in inches, and the age or height range it suits
- Brake type, and whether it has a coaster brake
- Number of gears, if any
- Whether stabilisers, mudguards or accessories are included

When to buy
Strongly seasonal: March to July is the main window, with a Christmas peak. A clean bike in a common wheel size listed in spring sells within days.
Prices move against that cycle for a buyer: the cheapest time to buy is when sellers are listing most, not when demand peaks.
