Seller-declared grades, sterling with an approximate US dollar equivalent at £1 ≈ $1.33 (July 2026). What each grade means.
What holds its value across Apple
- Battery health above 85% on anything with a battery, which buyers ask for by number
- The original box, cable and adapter, which matter more here than on other brands
- Higher storage tiers, which command a clear premium second-hand
- Devices still inside AppleCare, which transfers with the device
What pulls Apple resale value down
- Activation Lock still enabled, which makes the device close to worthless because it cannot be reset
- Third-party screen or battery repairs, which trigger a service warning in Settings that buyers see
- Any finance agreement outstanding, which blocks a clean transfer
- Bent chassis on laptops and tablets, usually a sign of a swollen battery
Identifying and dating yours
- The model identifier is in Settings > General > About, or on the underside of a laptop — it is what buyers search, not the marketing name
- Serial number checks against Apple’s coverage page confirm warranty status and age
- Battery health is readable in Settings and should be photographed
What lifts any smart speaker, whatever the label
Smart speakers depend entirely on continued cloud support, which means an unsupported model is close to worthless.
- Models still supported by their platform
- Better-sounding larger units
- Original power supply, usually proprietary
- Clean fabric grilles
And what pulls one down
- Discontinued models with withdrawn support
- Missing proprietary power supplies
- Stained or damaged fabric covers
- Accounts left linked to the device
Working out what yours is worth
- Confirm the model still receives platform support
- Factory reset it and unlink your account
- Check you have the correct power supply
What to state in the listing
- Brand, model and generation
- Whether the original power adapter is included
- Whether it has a screen, and any built-in hub functionality
- Speaker and microphone condition, and whether it has been deregistered
Brand, model and generation: “Amazon Echo Dot 4th Generation, Charcoal”. Generation is what distinguishes near-identical models. Say whether the original power adapter is included — many are proprietary wattages and a generic one will not run the device.
Preparing and photographing it
- Identify the exact model and generation, which is usually on the base.
- Deregister the device from your account and factory reset it.
- Test the speaker at volume and check the microphones respond.
- The speaker from the front
- The base, showing model and generation markings
- The power connector and any buttons
- Any scuff, fabric mark or damage
When it sells best, and handing it over
Strong Christmas lift, otherwise steady. These sell quickly at low prices because they are cheap new.
Light and cheap to post. Include the correct adapter and photograph what goes in the parcel.
What buyers ask
Is a locked iPhone or iPad worth anything?
Very little. Activation Lock cannot be bypassed, so the device cannot be reset for a new owner. Remove the account before listing.
Does battery health affect resale value?
Substantially. Above 85% sells at the normal rate; below 80% buyers negotiate hard because a replacement is an immediate cost.
How much is an Apple smart speaker worth?
Roughly £26 to £117 depending on condition, against £20 to £90 for smart speakers generally. The identification points above are what move a listing to the top of that range.
What the fees would take elsewhere
At the mid-range £71 for an Apple smart speaker, against what the commission marketplaces would deduct:
| Platform | Fee | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Poshmark | −£14 | £57 |
| eBay | −£10 | £61 |
| Mercari | −£7 | £64 |
| Etsy | −£5 | £66 |
| WishThrift | −£0 | £71 |
Seller-side rates verified 26 Jul 2026, percentages only — the per-order and processing charges those platforms add are excluded, so the real gap is wider.
