What holds its value across Apple

• Battery health above 85% on anything with a battery, which buyers ask for by number
• The original box, cable and adapter, which matter more here than on other brands
• Higher storage tiers, which command a clear premium second-hand
• Devices still inside AppleCare, which transfers with the device

What pulls Apple resale value down

• Activation Lock still enabled, which makes the device close to worthless because it cannot be reset
• Third-party screen or battery repairs, which trigger a service warning in Settings that buyers see
• Any finance agreement outstanding, which blocks a clean transfer
• Bent chassis on laptops and tablets, usually a sign of a swollen battery

Identifying and dating yours

1. The model identifier is in Settings > General > About, or on the underside of a laptop — it is what buyers search, not the marketing name
2. Serial number checks against Apple’s coverage page confirm warranty status and age
3. Battery health is readable in Settings and should be photographed

What lifts any iPad, whatever the label

iPads hold value better than most tablets, and the range mostly reflects which line it is — the standard, Air and Pro models age very differently.

• Pro and Air models, which stay in demand long after the base model has fallen away
• Cellular versions, which sell for a clear premium over Wi-Fi only
• Larger storage, since nothing can be added later
• Apple Pencil support, and the Pencil included if you have it

And what pulls one down

• Any activation lock still attached to an old Apple account
• Screen delamination or a lifting digitiser on older units
• Base models too old to take current iPadOS releases
• Heavy corner dents, which suggest the screen has taken a shock

Working out what yours is worth

1. Check the model number in Settings > General > About
2. Confirm it takes the current iPadOS release
3. Compare sold listings for the same line, generation and connectivity

What to state in the listing

• Exact generation and release year, plus storage in GB
• Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi plus Cellular, and whether the cellular is unlocked
• Which Apple Pencil generation it supports, if any
• Whether the charger and cable are included

Generation, storage and connectivity: “iPad Air 4th Gen 64GB Wi-Fi, Space Grey”. If it takes a particular Apple Pencil generation, mention it — that is a search buyers make deliberately, and stating compatibility saves you three messages.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Find the model in Settings → General → About and note the generation and storage. “iPad 9th generation 64GB” is a listing; “iPad” is not.
2. Sign out of iCloud and erase all content and settings so Activation Lock is cleared.
3. Check whether it is Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi plus Cellular, because the cellular version is worth meaningfully more.

When it sells best, and handing it over

Steady demand all year, rising before Christmas and at the start of the school year. Cellular models and larger storage sizes sell fastest.

Small, light and cheap to post, but valuable enough to attract payment scams — confirm cleared funds first. Protect the screen well if posting; a cracked-in-transit iPad is an argument with no good ending.

What buyers ask

Is a locked iPhone or iPad worth anything?

Very little. Activation Lock cannot be bypassed, so the device cannot be reset for a new owner. Remove the account before listing.

Does battery health affect resale value?

Substantially. Above 85% sells at the normal rate; below 80% buyers negotiate hard because a replacement is an immediate cost.

How much is an Apple iPad worth?

Roughly £117 to £585 depending on condition, against £90 to £450 for iPads generally. The identification points above are what move a listing to the top of that range.
