Condition on WishThrift is described by the seller against five grades, and nobody inspects it on your behalf — so the description and the photographs are what you are buying on.

The checklist before you pay
A stolen bike is the real risk in this category, and a cracked frame is the expensive one. Everything else — chain, cables, tyres — is a consumable.
Run through these before money changes hands — they are the things that decide whether an electric bike is worth what is being asked:
- A degraded battery, which is the single largest replacement cost
- Generic or discontinued motor systems with no parts support
- Water ingress around the controller or display
- Missing charger, which is proprietary and costly
And the things worth paying more for, because they hold their value:
- A battery holding close to its original range
- A recognised motor system with parts and servicing available
- Low mileage on the display where fitted
- Original charger and any spare battery
Common faults and fakes
Counterfeit carbon frames sold as premium brands are a known and genuinely dangerous problem, usually detectable on decal edges and dropout finish.
Ask for the frame serial from under the bottom bracket and check it against a stolen-bike register before you pay. Ask for close photographs of the head tube and chainstays.

Questions to ask the seller
These are the three that get asked most often about an electric bike, and the answers tell you most of what you need:
Give the age, the capacity and the range you actually achieve. Replacement batteries cost several hundred pounds, so this single answer determines the price.
Answer from your own riding, with the assist level and terrain. Quoting the manufacturer’s optimistic figure will be found out on the buyer’s first ride.
Confirm it, and confirm you have the battery key. Proprietary chargers and keys are awkward and expensive to replace.
Also worth establishing before you commit:
- Charge fully and ride a known route to measure real range
- Note the motor system, battery capacity in watt-hours, and the mileage
- Check the charging port and controller housing for corrosion
Photographs to ask for
If the listing does not already show these, ask — a seller who has the item will send them in minutes:
- The whole bike side on, drive side
- The battery removed from the frame, showing its condition and the capacity label
- The display powered on, showing charge and assist level
- The motor, and the drivetrain and brakes
Details to confirm before you commit
- Motor brand, power in watts, and whether it is mid-drive or hub-mounted
- Battery capacity in watt-hours, its age, and realistic range from a real ride
- Number of charge cycles if the display reports it
- Whether the charger and a battery key are included, and the frame size

When to buy
Spring and summer are strongest, though electric bikes sell better through winter than conventional ones because commuters buy year round. Mid-drive systems from known brands sell fastest.
Prices move against that cycle for a buyer: the cheapest time to buy is when sellers are listing most, not when demand peaks.
Paying and collecting safely
