What holds its value across Cartier

• The Tank in its named variants — Louis, Must, Americaine, Francaise — which have held a collectors’ market continuously since the 1970s

• Santos models with the visible screws on the bezel, which is the design detail the line is known for and the one buyers search by name

What pulls Cartier resale value down

• A missing Love screwdriver, which is a small part with a large effect — replacing it properly means a trip to a boutique and a charge the buyer will discount for
• Aftermarket diamonds set into a piece that left the factory plain, which does not add the stones’ value and does reduce the watch or bracelet to scrap in many eyes
• Quartz movements in the Must de Cartier line, which are far more common than the mechanical versions and sit at a fraction of the price
• Polished-out engraving on the caseback or the inside of a bangle, which removes the serial and makes the piece much harder to sell

Identifying and dating yours

1. The serial is engraved on the caseback of a watch and on the inner face of a Love or Trinity bangle — photograph it straight on, because buyers ask for it first
2. Gold pieces carry a hallmark alongside the Cartier signature; the metal mark and the signature should be crisply struck rather than shallow or uneven
3. The Love bracelet has its size stamped inside next to the serial, and that number decides who can wear it, so it belongs in the listing title

What lifts any engagement ring, whatever the label

Working out what yours is worth

1. Find any certificate and note the stone’s carat, cut, colour and clarity
2. Have a jeweller check the claws and confirm the metal
3. Compare sold listings for a similar stone and setting rather than the retail price

What to state in the listing

• Metal and carat from the hallmark, and total ring weight
• Centre stone type, carat weight, and whether it is natural, lab-grown or a simulant
• Whether a certificate or valuation is included, and from whom
• Ring size, and whether it has been resized

Metal, stone and carat weight: “18ct White Gold Solitaire Engagement Ring, 0.5ct Diamond, Certificated”. The word certificated does a great deal of work if it is true. State the ring size, and if the stone is moissanite, lab-grown or cubic zirconia, say so in the title — not doing so is the fastest way to lose a sale at inspection.

Preparing and photographing it

1. Find any certificate, valuation or receipt. A GIA or equivalent certificate transforms both the price and the speed of sale.
2. Photograph the hallmark and weigh the ring, and note the ring size.
3. Clean it gently, and examine the claws with a loupe or phone macro to check no stone is loose.

When it sells best, and handing it over

A slower, more considered sale than most jewellery, often several weeks. Certificated rings sell markedly faster. There is a modest lift before Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

High value in a tiny parcel. Confirm cleared payment first, use fully tracked and insured postage, and photograph the ring and the sealed packaging. Many buyers at this level prefer to meet, which is entirely reasonable.

Is a quartz Cartier worth selling?

Yes, but price it realistically. Quartz Must and Panthere models are genuine Cartier and sell steadily, they simply sit well below the mechanical references in value.

What paperwork should I include with a Cartier?
