Cashmere Sweater Resale Value

A used cashmere sweater typically sells for between £20 and £90, with most changing hands around £55. Cashmere is judged almost entirely on how it has been washed and stored, which is why two identical jumpers can sell for very different amounts.

The short version

  • Typical range: £20 – £90
  • Biggest single factor: condition — see the table below
  • Category: Clothing
  • Cost to sell on WishThrift: nothing, at any price

What a used cashmere sweater is worth by condition

Condition does more to the price than anything else. These figures are worked from the top of the range for cashmere sweaters, so treat them as a starting point and adjust for the specifics of yours.

ConditionTypical priceWhat it means
New with Tags£90Unused, tags or seals intact
Like New£76Barely used, no visible wear
Good£58Light signs of use, complete and working
Fair£40Heavily used, or a described fault or missing part
For Parts£22Not working or incomplete, sold as seen

These are the five grades WishThrift listings use, and sellers set the grade themselves — see what each condition grade means. Figures are shown in pounds as a reference point. On WishThrift prices display in your own currency, and sellers set their own asking price.

What raises the value of a cashmere sweater

  • Two-ply or heavier construction with real weight to it
  • No pilling, or pilling that has been properly removed
  • Full-fashioned shoulders and a soft, dense handle
  • Classic colours that sell in any season

What lowers it

  • Moth holes, which are common and immediately visible
  • Felting or shrinkage from a hot wash
  • Thin single-ply knits that have gone see-through at the elbows
  • Stretched cuffs and hems that no longer recover

How to work out what yours is worth

  1. Hold the knit up to the light to reveal moth damage and thin patches
  2. Check the composition label for the cashmere percentage and ply
  3. De-pill it carefully before photographing

Once you have those three answers you can place your own cashmere sweater on the table above with reasonable confidence. If it sits between two rows, price it toward the lower one — items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully.

Frequently asked questions

Is used cashmere worth buying or selling?

Yes, on both sides. Good cashmere outlasts most wardrobes, and buyers actively look for it second hand because the new price is high.

Do moth holes make a cashmere jumper unsellable?

Not unsellable, but they lower the price considerably. Disclose them with a photograph — buyers will find them.

Does de-pilling actually increase what I get?

Noticeably. It takes a few minutes with a comb or a fabric shaver and makes the difference between looking tired and looking cared for.
