How to Sell a Used Wedding Band

A used wedding band typically sells for £40 to £350, and on WishThrift it costs you nothing to list — no fee, no commission, so you keep the whole amount you agree. Wedding bands sell steadily and without sentiment on the buyer’s side — what they want is the metal, the hallmark, the width and the size, stated precisely.

The short version

  • Typical range: £40 – £350 — see the full wedding band value guide
  • What decides your price: condition, and how well you evidence it in photographs
  • Cost to sell here: nothing, at any price
  • Category: Jewellery & Watches

Before you photograph it

Ten minutes here is worth more than anything else you will do. Buyers are deciding between your listing and someone else’s, and preparation is what visibly separates the two.

  • Photograph the hallmark inside the band, which gives the metal and often the assay office and year.
  • Weigh it in grams, since precious metal weight is a real part of the value.
  • Measure the size and the band width in millimetres, and note the profile — court, flat or D-shape.

The photographs that sell a wedding band

Four photographs do almost all the work. Shoot in daylight, near a window, with the item against something plain — and do not use the flash, which flattens texture and hides exactly what buyers are trying to see.

  1. The band from the front and on edge
  2. The hallmark inside, magnified and legible
  3. The band on a sizer or with a ruler for width
  4. Any inscription inside, plus every scratch, dent or thinning

Photograph the flaws too. It feels counterproductive, but a listing that shows the worst of an item gets fewer questions, fewer withdrawn offers and fewer arguments at handover. Buyers who can see the damage stop imagining something worse.

Writing the title and description

Metal, width and size: “9ct Gold Wedding Band, 4mm, Size P, Hallmarked”. Metal purity, width and size are all searches. If there is an engraved inscription inside, say so — some buyers mind and some do not, but all want to know before it arrives.

Then state these in the description, because a buyer who has to ask is a buyer who might not bother:

  • Metal and purity, from the hallmark
  • Weight in grams
  • Ring size and band width in millimetres, and the profile
  • Any inscription, and the condition including thinning or scratches

What buyers will actually ask

You will receive the same three messages about a wedding band. Answering them in the listing itself removes the back-and-forth, and answering them well when they do arrive is what turns an enquiry into a sale.

“What does the hallmark say?”

Photograph it rather than transcribing. Assay marks carry the metal, the office and often a date letter, and buyers read them more accurately than a description.

“Is there an inscription?”

Say so and photograph it. Engravings can usually be removed or the ring resized, but the buyer should know what they are getting.

“How much does it weigh?”

Weigh it in grams. For precious metal the weight is a genuine floor under the price and buyers calculate it.

Pricing it so it actually sells

Start from the honest condition grade rather than the price you hope for. WishThrift listings use five grades — New with Tags, Like New, Good, Fair and For Parts — and what each grade means is worth reading before you choose, because grading up is the most expensive mistake sellers make. It does not raise the price; it produces a buyer who arrives expecting something else.

The wedding band value guide prices all five grades for this item. Pick your grade, take the figure, and if you sit between two grades price toward the lower one. Items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully, and on a free platform there is no fee eating the difference anyway.

What you keep, compared

On a £195 sale — roughly the middle of the range for a wedding band — here is what the commission-charging platforms would take, and what you would keep on each:

Seller-side rates verified 26 Jul 2026 — Poshmark: 20% commission on sales of $15 and above; eBay: 13.6% final value fee, plus a per-order fee; Mercari: flat 10% selling fee; Etsy: 6.5% transaction fee, plus a listing fee and payment processing. Percentages are applied to the sterling figure above; the fixed per-order and processing charges those platforms add are quoted in their own currency and are not included here, so the real deductions are slightly larger. Timing and getting it to the buyer

Steady year round with a lift in spring and early summer around wedding season. Hallmarked gold and platinum bands sell within days.

Post tracked and signed in a rigid box. Consider the value carefully when choosing a service, since many carriers exclude or cap precious metals in their cover.

WishThrift does not process payments or arrange delivery — you and the buyer agree both directly — so confirm payment has cleared before the item leaves your hands, and keep the conversation on the site so there is a record of what was agreed.

Ready to list it? It takes about two minutes, costs nothing, and there is no commission when it sells — create a free account or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions

What is a used wedding band worth?

Typically £40 to £350 depending on metal, weight and width. See the wedding band value guide for the condition bands.

Can an inscription be removed?

Usually yes, by a jeweller, though it slightly thins the band. Mention the inscription and that removal is possible — it addresses the objection before it is raised.

Do wedding bands hold their value?

The metal does, which puts a floor under the price. Beyond that, condition, width and whether it can be resized are what decide it.
