How to Sell Home & Garden

Used home and garden items sell for roughly £3 to £450 on WishThrift, and listing it costs nothing — no fee, no commission, no buyer-side charge. Home and garden is the most seasonal category on the site, and the timing decides the price more than the condition does. Garden items sell in a short spring window and are worth substantially less outside it. Almost everything here is collection-only and bulky, so state the dimensions, the weight and whether it dismantles — that is what converts enquiries that would otherwise go quiet.

How to sell home and garden items, item by item

What you keep on a typical sale

On a £47 sale — around the middle for this category — a 20% commission would take £9 and a 10% one £5. On WishThrift you keep the whole £47, and the buyer pays no surcharge either. The full fee comparison sets out what each marketplace actually charges.

When home and garden items actually sell

This category splits in two. Garden items — furniture, sheds, greenhouses, mowers, barbecues — have a short season from March to July, and the same item can be worth half as much in October as in May, so overwintering is often worth more than discounting. Indoor items such as rugs, lamps and mirrors run the other way, lifting from September as people warm up rooms, with a second window in January.

Before you list anything

Two things decide most of the price in every category, and both are settled before you write the listing. The first is the condition grade: WishThrift uses five — New with Tags, Like New, Good, Fair and For Parts — and what each one means is worth reading, because grading optimistically does not raise the price, it just produces a buyer who arrives expecting something else. The second is the price itself: the home & garden value guides price each item across all five grades.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to sell garden items?

March to July, and the difference is large rather than marginal. A barbecue, garden set or greenhouse listed in spring routinely sells within days at a price it simply will not reach in autumn. If it is already October, storing it until March usually beats discounting it now.

Why do bulky items get enquiries that go quiet?

Because the buyer cannot work out the logistics. State the dimensions, an honest weight, whether it dismantles and whether you can help load, and the enquiries that used to disappear turn into collections.

Is it worth restoring garden furniture before selling?

Cleaning yes, restoring rarely. A wash removes algae and transforms the photographs, but sanding and oiling teak is a weekend of work that many buyers did not want — a good number actively prefer the weathered silver-grey finish.
