How to Sell a Used Greenhouse

A used greenhouse typically sells for £60 to £400, and on WishThrift it costs you nothing to list — no fee, no commission, so you keep the whole amount you agree. Greenhouses are worth good money and are genuinely dangerous to dismantle — older ones are glazed with horticultural glass that breaks into blades, and the buyer needs telling before they arrive.

The short version

  • Typical range: £60 – £400 — see the full greenhouse value guide
  • What decides your price: condition, and how well you evidence it in photographs
  • Cost to sell here: nothing, at any price
  • Category: Home & Garden

Before you photograph it

Ten minutes here is worth more than anything else you will do. Buyers are deciding between your listing and someone else’s, and preparation is what visibly separates the two.

  • Establish what the glazing is: horticultural glass, toughened glass or polycarbonate. They dismantle very differently and the risk is not the same.
  • Count the panes and note any that are cracked or missing, and check the aluminium frame for bent sections.
  • Check the door runs, the vent openers, and whether the base or anchor kit is included.

The photographs that sell a greenhouse

Four photographs do almost all the work. Shoot in daylight, near a window, with the item against something plain — and do not use the flash, which flattens texture and hides exactly what buyers are trying to see.

  1. The whole greenhouse in place, from a corner, whole
  2. The inside, showing the frame, staging and roof vents
  3. The glazing close up, so the type is visible, plus any cracked or missing pane
  4. The base and door, and any bent frame section or missing fitting

Photograph the flaws too. It feels counterproductive, but a listing that shows the worst of an item gets fewer questions, fewer withdrawn offers and fewer arguments at handover. Buyers who can see the damage stop imagining something worse.

Writing the title and description

Size, frame and glazing: “8x6ft Aluminium Greenhouse, Toughened Glass, Buyer Dismantles”. The glazing type belongs in the title because it changes the job and the risk, and stating that the buyer dismantles filters for someone who has done it before.

Then state these in the description, because a buyer who has to ask is a buyer who might not bother:

  • Footprint in feet and ridge height
  • Frame material, glazing type, and how many panes
  • Whether the base, staging, vents and anchor kit are included
  • How many panes are cracked or missing, counted honestly

What buyers will actually ask

You will receive the same three messages about a greenhouse. Answering them in the listing itself removes the back-and-forth, and answering them well when they do arrive is what turns an enquiry into a sale.

“What sort of glass is it?”

Answer specifically. Horticultural glass is thin, unedged and breaks into long shards; toughened glass and polycarbonate are far safer to handle. Buyers with experience always ask this first.

“How many panes are broken?”

Count them and say. Replacement panes are cheap and easy for standard sizes, so an honest count is priced in rather than being a dealbreaker.

“Who takes it down?”

Say clearly, and if the buyer is dismantling, insist on gloves and eye protection in the listing. It is a genuine hazard, not an over-caution.

Pricing it so it actually sells

Start from the honest condition grade rather than the price you hope for. WishThrift listings use five grades — New with Tags, Like New, Good, Fair and For Parts — and what each grade means is worth reading before you choose, because grading up is the most expensive mistake sellers make. It does not raise the price; it produces a buyer who arrives expecting something else.

The greenhouse value guide prices all five grades for this item. Pick your grade, take the figure, and if you sit between two grades price toward the lower one. Items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully, and on a free platform there is no fee eating the difference anyway.

What you keep, compared

On a £230 sale — roughly the middle of the range for a greenhouse — here is what the commission-charging platforms would take, and what you would keep on each:

Mercari−£23£207

Seller-side rates verified 26 Jul 2026 — Poshmark: 20% commission on sales of $15 and above; eBay: 13.6% final value fee, plus a per-order fee; Mercari: flat 10% selling fee; Etsy: 6.5% transaction fee, plus a listing fee and payment processing. Percentages are applied to the sterling figure above; the fixed per-order and processing charges those platforms add are quoted in their own currency and are not included here, so the real deductions are slightly larger. Timing and getting it to the buyer

Strongest from February to June, when growers are setting up for the season. Autumn sales are slow and achieve noticeably less.

Collection, with the buyer dismantling in almost every case. Panes travel flat and interleaved, never loose. Sweep the site afterwards — broken horticultural glass in a lawn is a lasting hazard.

WishThrift does not process payments or arrange delivery — you and the buyer agree both directly — so confirm payment has cleared before the item leaves your hands, and keep the conversation on the site so there is a record of what was agreed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a used greenhouse worth?

Typically £60 to £400 depending on size, frame and glazing. See the greenhouse value guide for the condition breakdown.

Is it safe to dismantle a greenhouse?

It can be, with gloves, eye protection, two people and patience — but old horticultural glass is thin and unedged and causes serious cuts. Say in the listing what the glazing is so the buyer arrives equipped.

Should I replace broken panes before selling?

For standard sizes it is cheap and makes the greenhouse far more appealing. For unusual sizes, just count the missing panes accurately and let the buyer price the job.
