How to Sell a Used Caravan

A used caravan typically sells for £2,000 to £15,000, and on WishThrift it costs you nothing to list — no fee, no commission, so you keep the whole amount you agree. Caravans sell on damp — every experienced buyer arrives with a moisture meter, so find out where you stand before you list rather than in front of them.

The short version

  • Typical range: £2,000 – £15,000 — see the full caravan value guide
  • What decides your price: condition, and how well you evidence it in photographs
  • Cost to sell here: nothing, at any price
  • Category: Vehicles

Before you photograph it

Ten minutes here is worth more than anything else you will do. Buyers are deciding between your listing and someone else’s, and preparation is what visibly separates the two.

  • Check for damp yourself around every window, roof light, seam and the front and rear panels, and along the floor edges.
  • Find the CRIS or equivalent registration document, the chassis number and the service history, and confirm no finance is outstanding.
  • Test everything: fridge on all fuels, heater, water pump, lights, sockets, and the gas system’s most recent safety check.

The photographs that sell a caravan

Four photographs do almost all the work. Shoot in daylight, near a window, with the item against something plain — and do not use the flash, which flattens texture and hides exactly what buyers are trying to see.

  1. The whole caravan outside, side on, hitched and level
  2. The full interior from both ends, including beds made up
  3. The kitchen, washroom and every appliance
  4. The chassis number, the paperwork, and any damp stain, delamination, crack or repair

Photograph the flaws too. It feels counterproductive, but a listing that shows the worst of an item gets fewer questions, fewer withdrawn offers and fewer arguments at handover. Buyers who can see the damage stop imagining something worse.

Writing the title and description

Make, model, year, berth and layout: “[Make] [Model] 2015, 4 Berth, Fixed Bed, Motor Mover”. Berth number and layout are the searches. A motor mover, awning or full service history each belong in the title because each materially changes the price.

Then state these in the description, because a buyer who has to ask is a buyer who might not bother:

  • Make, model, year, berth number and layout
  • MTPLM and unladen weight, which decide what car can legally tow it
  • Service history, last damp report, and gas safety check date
  • What is included — awning, motor mover, battery, gas bottles, accessories

What buyers will actually ask

You will receive the same three messages about a caravan. Answering them in the listing itself removes the back-and-forth, and answering them well when they do arrive is what turns an enquiry into a sale.

“Is there any damp?”

Get a reading or a recent damp report and share it. Every buyer checks, so pre-empting it with a real figure is far stronger than waiting to be caught out.

“What does it weigh?”

Give the MTPLM from the plate. Buyers must match it to their car’s towing limit and licence entitlement, and it is a legal constraint rather than a preference.

“Is there outstanding finance?”

Answer directly. Buyers run checks against the chassis number, and undisclosed finance ends a sale immediately and permanently.

Pricing it so it actually sells

Start from the honest condition grade rather than the price you hope for. WishThrift listings use five grades — New with Tags, Like New, Good, Fair and For Parts — and what each grade means is worth reading before you choose, because grading up is the most expensive mistake sellers make. It does not raise the price; it produces a buyer who arrives expecting something else.

The caravan value guide prices all five grades for this item. Pick your grade, take the figure, and if you sit between two grades price toward the lower one. Items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully, and on a free platform there is no fee eating the difference anyway.

What you keep, compared

On a £8,500 sale — roughly the middle of the range for a caravan — here is what the commission-charging platforms would take, and what you would keep on each:

Where you sell itFeeYou keep
WishThrift£0£8,500
Poshmark−£1,700£6,800
eBay−£1,156£7,344
Mercari−£850£7,650
Etsy−£552£7,948

Seller-side rates verified 26 Jul 2026 — Poshmark: 20% commission on sales of $15 and above; eBay: 13.6% final value fee, plus a per-order fee; Mercari: flat 10% selling fee; Etsy: 6.5% transaction fee, plus a listing fee and payment processing. Percentages are applied to the sterling figure above; the fixed per-order and processing charges those platforms add are quoted in their own currency and are not included here, so the real deductions are slightly larger. Timing and getting it to the buyer

February to August is the season, peaking in spring. Autumn and winter sales are slow and achieve less, so overwintering a caravan is usually worth more than discounting it in November.

High value. Never hand over keys or documents until funds have fully cleared. Write a dated receipt naming both parties, the chassis number and the price. WishThrift does not process or hold payments, so the transaction is entirely between you and the buyer.

WishThrift does not process payments or arrange delivery — you and the buyer agree both directly — so confirm payment has cleared before the item leaves your hands, and keep the conversation on the site so there is a record of what was agreed.

Ready to list it? It takes about two minutes, costs nothing, and there is no commission when it sells — create a free account or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions

What is a used caravan worth?

Typically £2,000 to £15,000 depending on age, layout, damp condition and service history. See the caravan value guide for the bands.

How much damp is acceptable in a caravan?

Readings under about 15% are generally considered dry, 15-20% is borderline and warrants investigation, and above 20% indicates active ingress. Share your actual readings rather than describing it as dry.

What paperwork should I hand over?

The CRIS or equivalent registration document, service history, any damp reports, the gas safety check and handbooks. Complete paperwork is worth real money on a caravan.
