  • Category: Vinyl & CDs
  • Cost to sell on WishThrift: nothing, at any price

What raises the value of a vinyl records

  • First pressings and early matrix numbers over later repressings
  • Sleeves free of ring wear, splits and writing
  • Any original inserts, posters or inner sleeves
  • Records that play cleanly with no persistent surface noise

What lowers it

  • Deep scratches that cause skipping or repeated clicks
  • Warping, which is often visible only when laid flat
  • Split or taped seams on the sleeve
  • Later repressings sold as originals, which buyers check

How to work out what yours is worth

  1. Check the run-out groove near the label for matrix and pressing codes
  2. Hold the record to the light at an angle to see scratches properly
  3. Lay it flat on a level surface to check for warp

Once you have those three answers you can place your own vinyl records on the table above with reasonable confidence. If it sits between two rows, price it toward the lower one — items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully.

Frequently asked questions

Are my old vinyl records worth anything?

Some are worth a great deal and most are worth a few pounds. Pressing details and sleeve condition matter far more than the artist alone.

How can I tell if a record is a first pressing?

Check the matrix code etched in the run-out groove near the label, along with the label design and catalogue number.

Does sleeve condition really matter?

Yes, often as much as the vinyl. Collectors grade both, and ring wear or a split seam can halve what an otherwise clean record fetches.
