How to Sell a Used Cooker

A used cooker typically sells for £80 to £350, and on WishThrift it costs you nothing to list — no fee, no commission, so you keep the whole amount you agree. Read this part first: if it is a gas cooker, it must be disconnected by a qualified gas engineer, and that single fact shapes the whole sale.

The short version

  • Typical range: £80 – £350 — see the full cooker value guide
  • What decides your price: condition, and how well you evidence it in photographs
  • Cost to sell here: nothing, at any price
  • Category: Kitchen & Appliances

Before you photograph it

Ten minutes here is worth more than anything else you will do. Buyers are deciding between your listing and someone else’s, and preparation is what visibly separates the two.

  • Establish whether it is gas, electric or dual fuel, and arrange proper disconnection for anything on gas.
  • Clean it thoroughly — oven interior, shelves, hob, and under the burners. Presentation moves the price here more than on almost any other appliance.
  • Test every ring, the oven, the grill and the timer, and note the model number from the plate inside the door frame.

The photographs that sell a cooker

Four photographs do almost all the work. Shoot in daylight, near a window, with the item against something plain — and do not use the flash, which flattens texture and hides exactly what buyers are trying to see.

  1. The whole cooker front on, clean, in place
  2. The oven interior with the door open and the light on
  3. The hob surface from above, including all burners or rings
  4. The rating plate showing make, model and fuel type, plus any dent, chip or damaged seal

Photograph the flaws too. It feels counterproductive, but a listing that shows the worst of an item gets fewer questions, fewer withdrawn offers and fewer arguments at handover. Buyers who can see the damage stop imagining something worse.

Writing the title and description

Fuel, type and width lead: “60cm Freestanding Electric Cooker, Double Oven, Fan Assisted” or “Range Cooker, Dual Fuel, 90cm”. Width is a hard constraint in a fitted kitchen, so it belongs in the title, and fuel type filters out the buyers who could never have used it.

Then state these in the description, because a buyer who has to ask is a buyer who might not bother:

  • Fuel type, and whether an electric one needs a dedicated cooker circuit rather than a plug
  • Width, height and depth in centimetres
  • Make, model and approximate age from the rating plate
  • What has been tested and what works, including grill, timer and every ring

What buyers will actually ask

You will receive the same three messages about a cooker. Answering them in the listing itself removes the back-and-forth, and answering them well when they do arrive is what turns an enquiry into a sale.

“Does everything work?”

Test each function and answer item by item. A dead grill or one failing ring is a small discount when disclosed and a returned buyer when not.

“Is it gas or electric?”

Say it in the title. Buyers with the wrong supply cannot use it at all, and this is the most common wasted enquiry on cooker listings.

“Who disconnects it?”

For gas, a qualified engineer must, and that is not negotiable. For electric, a hardwired cooker needs an electrician or a competent person to isolate it properly.

Pricing it so it actually sells

Start from the honest condition grade rather than the price you hope for. WishThrift listings use five grades — New with Tags, Like New, Good, Fair and For Parts — and what each grade means is worth reading before you choose, because grading up is the most expensive mistake sellers make. It does not raise the price; it produces a buyer who arrives expecting something else.

The cooker value guide prices all five grades for this item. Pick your grade, take the figure, and if you sit between two grades price toward the lower one. Items priced honestly sell faster than items priced hopefully, and on a free platform there is no fee eating the difference anyway.

What you keep, compared

On a £215 sale — roughly the middle of the range for a cooker — here is what the commission-charging platforms would take, and what you would keep on each:

Mercari−£22£193

Seller-side rates verified 26 Jul 2026 — Poshmark: 20% commission on sales of $15 and above; eBay: 13.6% final value fee, plus a per-order fee; Mercari: flat 10% selling fee; Etsy: 6.5% transaction fee, plus a listing fee and payment processing. Percentages are applied to the sterling figure above; the fixed per-order and processing charges those platforms add are quoted in their own currency and are not included here, so the real deductions are slightly larger. Timing and getting it to the buyer

Steady, with lifts when people move house in late spring and early autumn. Clean, recent, working cookers in standard 60cm widths sell within a week; range cookers take longer but hold price.

Collection, two people, and never before it is safely disconnected. Tape the door shut for transport and remove the shelves so they do not slide about and crack the glass.

WishThrift does not process payments or arrange delivery — you and the buyer agree both directly — so confirm payment has cleared before the item leaves your hands, and keep the conversation on the site so there is a record of what was agreed.

Ready to list it? It takes about two minutes, costs nothing, and there is no commission when it sells — create a free account or see how selling works.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell a used gas cooker privately?

Yes, but disconnection and reconnection must be done by a properly qualified gas engineer. Say in the listing that it needs professional disconnection, so the buyer budgets for it rather than turning up with a spanner.

What is a used cooker worth?

Typically £80 to £350, with range cookers and recent models above. See the cooker value guide for pricing by condition.

Does a deep clean actually raise the price?

More than almost any other single action on this item. A cooker photographs as either cared for or neglected, and buyers price those two things very differently for identical machines.
