Sell Your Motorhome in the US

Used motorhomes in the US typically sell for $8,100 to $40,400. Motorhomes combine a vehicle and a habitation, and both need checking, which is why damp reports and service history matter equally.

Selling a motorhome in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

The US resale market is enormous and highly local — most transactions still happen between people within driving distance of each other, and buyers expect to collect rather than wait for a courier.

Two practical things shape a US sale. Shipping is priced by dimensional weight as well as actual weight, so a light bulky item can cost far more to send than a heavy small one — measure the box before you quote. And meeting in person is common enough that many police departments now run designated safe-exchange areas in their car parks.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Commission a damp survey and share the readings
  • Gather both vehicle and habitation service records

Getting it ready

  • Confirm there is no outstanding finance, and be ready to evidence it. Buyers run checks against the registration.
  • Check for damp throughout the habitation area and test every system — fridge, heating, water, electrics, hookup and leisure battery.

Photograph

  • The full interior including beds made up and the washroom
  • The cab, the odometer reading and the engine bay

Put in the description

  • Service history for both the base vehicle and the habitation area, with dates
  • Everything included — awning, bike rack, solar, gas bottles, accessories

Make, base vehicle, year, berth and layout: “[Make] on Fiat Ducato, 2017, 4 Berth, Fixed Rear Bed, 46k Miles”. Berth, layout and mileage are the searches. Habitation service history and a recent MOT belong in the title because they materially move the price.

February to August, peaking in spring. Autumn listings take longer and achieve less, so if it is late in the year, storing until spring is usually worth more than accepting a winter offer.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $40,378 a buyer pays is the $40,378 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Common questions

Where can I sell a motorhome in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Is there outstanding finance?

Answer plainly and be ready to prove it. On a vehicle at this value a buyer will always check, and any ambiguity ends the conversation.

What is a habitation check?

An annual inspection of the living area — gas, electrics, water and damp. A recent certificate reassures buyers considerably.

Does damp always mean walk away?

Not always, but it is expensive to fix properly. A recent survey with clear readings is the single most valuable document you can provide.
