Selling a cello in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

The US resale market is enormous and highly local — most transactions still happen between people within driving distance of each other, and buyers expect to collect rather than wait for a courier.

Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.

Getting it ready

Check the bridge is standing straight, the soundpost is in place, and the endpin extends and locks.
Inspect the top, back and ribs for cracks and open seams, and check the bow.

Size and contents: “Full Size 4/4 Cello with Bow and Soft Case, Ready to Play”. Size is the primary filter. Say whether a case is hard or soft, since transporting a cello without a proper case is a real problem for the buyer.

Lifts in September and before Christmas. Student sizes sell fastest; full-size instruments sell more slowly but at higher prices.
