Fair Vehicles — Second-Hand Buying Guide

Fair means a fault the seller has named, and it prices vehicles at about 45% of the top grade: $12 to $18,190 across this category (about £9 to £13,500). A named fault or a paperwork gap: an advisory outstanding, a warning light on, corrosion starting, or documents missing.

Where the line falls

Vehicles are the one category where the paperwork can be worth more than the metal: service history, documents and a clean title decide the price before anybody looks at the bodywork.

For comparison, one grade up is Good Vehicles and one step down is For Parts Vehicles.

What pulls the price down at this grade

  • Alloy Wheels — Buckled or cracked wheels, which are unsafe
  • Boat — Osmosis blistering in the hull
  • Car — Missing service history, which buyers discount heavily
  • Car Parts — Parts listed without a part number
  • Car Stereo — Missing cages and wiring harnesses
  • Car Tyres — Tread near or below the legal minimum
  • Caravan — Damp in the walls, floor or ceiling
  • Jet Ski — High engine hours with no service history
  • Moped — Worn drive belts and rollers

Listing at the Fair grade

Say whether it has ever been written off and declared as such. That single disclosure is the most important sentence in the listing.

Shots that carry the most weight in vehicles:

  • Quad Bike — The whole machine side on, clean, whole
  • Roof Box — The box closed, from the side, whole
  • Tow Bar — The tow bar whole, laid out
  • Trailer — The trailer whole, from a three-quarter angle

On a typical $9,101 listing, a marketplace charging 20% takes $1,820, one charging 13.6% takes $1,238 and one charging 10% takes $910. WishThrift charges neither side, so you keep the whole $9,101. Listing is free.
