Sell Your Knife Set in the US

Used knife sets in the US typically sell for $20 to $135. Knife value rests on steel and construction, and forged full-tang knives are worth many times stamped ones.

What lifts the price

  • Forged, full-tang construction
  • Straight edges with no chips

What pulls it down

  • Loose handles and exposed tangs
  • Stamped budget knives

Selling a knife set in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

The US resale market is enormous and highly local — most transactions still happen between people within driving distance of each other, and buyers expect to collect rather than wait for a courier.

Distances are the real constraint. State plainly whether you will ship or collection only, because a buyer three states away will otherwise ask.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Look at the bolster and spine for forged construction
  • Confirm the block and all knives are present

Getting it ready

  • Confirm the set is complete against the block, and note any knife that has been replaced with a different make.
  • Wash and dry them fully. Do not sharpen aggressively before selling; a clumsy re-grind takes value off a good knife.

Photograph

  • The block or case, showing every slot and whether any is empty
  • One blade close up along its edge, showing sharpness and any chip

Put in the description

  • Whether the block, case or sharpening steel is included
  • Condition of each edge and handle, and any rust, chip or replaced piece

Maker and piece count: “Global 5 Piece Knife Set with Block” or “Japanese Damascus Chef Knife Set, 3 Pieces”. Named makers are the search here and carry most of the value; steel type and full tang construction are worth stating when true.

Lifts before Christmas and in January. Named Japanese and German makers sell within days; unbranded block sets are slow and compete on price alone.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $135 a buyer pays is the $135 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Common questions

Where can I sell a knife set in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Are the blades chipped?

Sight along each edge under a light and say. Small chips grind out; a large chip near the tip is a permanent change to the knife’s shape.

How do I tell forged from stamped?

Forged knives have a thick bolster where blade meets handle and a tapering spine. Stamped ones are uniform thickness.

Should I sharpen before selling?

A light sharpening helps, but avoid heavy regrinding — it changes the profile and buyers notice.
