Selling jeans in the US
Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.
Two practical things shape a US sale. Shipping is priced by dimensional weight as well as actual weight, so a light bulky item can cost far more to send than a heavy small one — measure the box before you quote. And meeting in person is common enough that many police departments now run designated safe-exchange areas in their car parks.
Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.
Working out what yours is worth
- Turn the outseam out and look for a selvedge line
- Measure the actual waist and inseam rather than trusting the label
Getting it ready
- Check the crotch seam and inner thigh, which is where jeans wear through and where buyers will look first.
- Read the tab and the internal tag for the exact cut name — 501, Slim Straight, Bootcut — and the fabric composition.

Brand, cut, then size, in that order, because that is exactly how buyers search: “Levi’s 501 Straight Jeans, W32 L34, Mid Blue”. Never rely on the label size alone — put the measured waist in the description, and say if they have been hemmed, because an altered inseam is the most common cause of a disappointed buyer.
Steady all year with no real season. Common sizes in recognised brands sell within a week or two; unusual leg lengths take longer but attract buyers who are specifically hunting and haggle less.
