Used hardback books in the US typically sell for $4 to $24. Hardbacks hold value better than paperbacks, and the dust jacket is usually where most of that value sits.

Selling hardback books in the US
Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.
Distances are the real constraint. State plainly whether you will ship or collection only, because a buyer three states away will otherwise ask.
Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.
Working out what yours is worth
- Check the copyright page for edition and printing
- Open the covers and check the hinges
Getting it ready
- Look at the copyright page for the edition and printing, and photograph it if there is a number line.
- Check the boards, spine ends and hinges, and look for foxing on the page edges.
Photograph
- The copyright page showing edition and number line
- The spine and spine ends, and the jacket flaps
Put in the description
- Whether the dust jacket is present, and its condition separately from the book
- Any inscription, bookplate, foxing or damage
Title, author, edition and jacket: “[Title], [Author], First Edition with Dust Jacket, 1984”. Edition and jacket presence are the two things collectors filter on, so both belong in the title when they apply. Do not call something a first edition unless the copyright page supports it.
Steady year round to collectors, with a lift before Christmas. Identified first editions sell quickly; book club editions and reprints compete on price.
It costs nothing to list
There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $24 a buyer pays is the $24 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Common questions
Where can I sell hardback books in the US?
List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.
Is it a first edition?
Photograph the copyright page and let the buyer judge. Number lines and publisher conventions vary, and collectors read them far more reliably than a seller’s summary.
What is a price-clipped jacket?
One with the printed price cut from the flap. It reduces value because it removes evidence of the edition.
Do book club editions count as firsts?
No, and they are worth far less. Check the copyright page and any lack of a printed jacket price.
