What lifts the price

  • Documented provenance from productions or studios
  • Signed items with photographic evidence

What pulls it down

  • Signatures with no supporting evidence
  • Mass-produced commemorative items

Selling film memorabilia in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

USPS, UPS and FedEx all cover the country. USPS Ground Advantage is normally cheapest for anything under a few pounds in weight; above that the gap narrows quickly.

Two practical things shape a US sale. Shipping is priced by dimensional weight as well as actual weight, so a light bulky item can cost far more to send than a heavy small one — measure the box before you quote. And meeting in person is common enough that many police departments now run designated safe-exchange areas in their car parks.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Check poster dimensions against known original sizes
  • Photograph the item and any documentation together

Getting it ready

  • Photograph identifying marks, studio stamps, printer’s marks and any numbering.
  • Do not restore, trim, flatten or reframe anything. Original condition, including honest wear, is what collectors want.

Photograph

  • Any studio stamp, printer’s mark, numbering or stamp on the reverse
  • Any certificate, receipt or provenance paperwork

Put in the description

  • Dimensions, and folded or rolled for paper items
  • What provenance paperwork exists, described exactly

Title, item type, year and origin: “Original UK Quad Poster, [Film], 1979, Folded” or “Screen-Used Prop [Item] with COA”. Say original or reprint plainly. Folded versus rolled is a real distinction on posters and collectors search for both.

Steady to a specialist audience year round, with lifts around anniversaries, re-releases and cast news. Well-documented pieces sell quickly; unattributed ones can sit indefinitely.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $404 a buyer pays is the $404 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the US

Common questions

Where can I sell film memorabilia in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Is it an original or a reprint?

Give the evidence rather than the conclusion — size, printing method, studio marks, where you got it. Collectors would rather assess your evidence than trust your verdict.

Are signatures worth much without provenance?

Far less. Evidence of signing — a photograph, receipt or recognised certificate — is much of what a buyer pays for.

Does folding reduce a poster’s value?

Original posters were often issued folded, so light fold lines are accepted. Splits along the folds are a different matter.
