Sell Your Camping Gear in the US

Used camping gear in the US typically sells for $27 to $200. Camping bundles sell better than individual items, because buyers are usually kitting out for a first trip.

What lifts the price

  • Complete bundles covering a full setup
  • Everything clean, dry and free of mildew

What pulls it down

  • Missing pegs, poles and guylines
  • Incomplete bundles with key items absent

Selling camping gear in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

The US resale market is enormous and highly local — most transactions still happen between people within driving distance of each other, and buyers expect to collect rather than wait for a courier.

Distances are the real constraint. State plainly whether you will ship or collection only, because a buyer three states away will otherwise ask.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Lay everything out and photograph the full bundle
  • List each piece individually in the description

Getting it ready

  • Check every item works — light stoves, inflate mats, test zips and torches with fresh batteries.
  • Air everything and make sure nothing was packed damp, since mould is the usual problem with stored gear.

Photograph

  • The two or three best items individually
  • Any brand labels grouped together

Put in the description

  • Condition of each, and whether everything has been tested
  • Whether anything was stored damp, and any mould or perishing

Contents and use: “2 Person Camping Bundle — Stove, Sleeping Bags, Mats, Lantern”. List the actual items in the title, because that is what buyers search. Saying who it suits — festival, family, wild camping — helps the right buyer find it.

April through August, peaking before summer holidays and the festival season. A camping bundle listed in November sells slowly.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $202 a buyer pays is the $202 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Common questions

Where can I sell camping gear in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Does everything work?

Test each item and say which you have verified. Untested is acceptable when stated; implied working is not.

What is the most common problem?

Mildew from packing away damp. It stains and smells, and it is the first thing an experienced camper checks for.

Do I need to list every item?

Yes. A vague bundle listing gets questions and low offers; an itemised one sells.
