Sell Your Armchair in Canada

Used armchairs in Canada typically sell for C$57 to C$375 (about $40 to $270). Frame quality decides everything here: a good frame can be reupholstered indefinitely, a poor one cannot be saved.

What pulls it down

  • Sagging seats and collapsed webbing
  • Cracked or racking frames

Selling an armchair in Canada

Interac e-Transfer is the norm and is instant and traceable, which suits a private sale well. It is what most buyers will suggest before anything else.

Canada’s resale market is concentrated in a handful of metro areas separated by very long distances, which makes it unusually collection-led — most buyers are looking for something they can pick up the same week.

Two practical things shape a Canadian sale. Interprovincial shipping costs can exceed the value of a mid-priced item, which is why so much trade here is collection-only. And winter genuinely interrupts handovers in much of the country, so agree a window rather than a fixed day between December and March.

Winter clothing and sports equipment move from October, and the spring thaw brings the strongest few weeks for furniture, bikes and garden items.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Sit in it and feel whether the seat platform still supports you
  • Rock it gently to check the frame does not flex

Getting it ready

  • Vacuum the seat and get down the sides of the cushion — buyers notice crumbs and coins before they notice the upholstery.
  • Look underneath for a fire safety label. In the UK, upholstered furniture made since 1988 should carry one, and buyers increasingly ask.

Photograph

  • The whole chair at a slight angle in a normally lit room, not pushed against a wall
  • The seat cushion lifted out, showing the deck and the underside of the cushion
  • The fire label and the legs, plus any stain, tear or thinning fabric

Put in the description

  • The upholstery material, and whether the cover is removable or washable
  • Whether the fire safety label is present
  • Any stain, tear, sagging or pet damage, stated before it is asked about

Buyers search by style and material, rarely by the word chair alone: “Mid Century Teak Armchair, Green Wool” or “Leather Wingback Armchair, Brown”. If it is a recognised make — Ercol, Parker Knoll, an IKEA model name — that word does more work than any adjective, so put it first.

Collection almost always. Measure your doorways and stairwell before you list, tell the buyer which floor it is on, and agree who is lifting before they arrive with a car that is too small.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the C$377 a buyer pays is the C$377 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Common questions

Where can I sell an armchair in Canada?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Interac e-Transfer is the norm and is instant and traceable, which suits a private sale well. It is what most buyers will suggest before anything else.

Can you help me load it?

Say in advance whether you can. An armchair is a two-person lift and a buyer who turns up alone expecting help they do not get will simply leave.

Are used armchairs worth much?

Design pieces and solid-framed chairs hold value well, because a good frame can be reupholstered. Cheap frames are worth very little.

Why does the fire label matter?

In some markets upholstered furniture cannot legally be resold without it, so check it is still attached before listing.
