Good Menswear — Second-Hand Buying Guide

Good is the grade most second-hand menswear is actually sold at — roughly 65% of top price, or $4 to $131 across the category (about £3 to £98). Worn regularly, sound and fully wearable: lining intact, buttons present, no shine through the cloth. A failed lining or a hole is Fair.

Where the line falls

Menswear is judged on the shoulder first: a jacket that fits the shoulder can be altered everywhere else, and one that does not cannot be fixed at any price.

For comparison, one grade up is Like New Menswear and one step down is Fair Menswear.

What to check before you buy

  • Blazer — Pinch the lapel to feel for a floating canvas layer
  • Bomber Jacket — Check the inner label for maker and any contract markings
  • Brogues — Look for a welt stitch line around the sole edge
  • Chinos — Hold them up and check whether the knees have set
  • Flannel Shirt — Feel the weight and check the nap is still raised
  • Oxford Shirt — Run a finger along the collar edge feeling for fraying
  • Polo Shirt — Stand the collar up and see whether it holds
  • Tie — Check the composition label for silk
  • Trench Coat — Confirm the belt and all buckles are present

Listing at the Good grade

Say whether it has been altered and whether the alterations can be reversed. Reversible alterations keep a jacket saleable and permanent ones do not.

Shots that carry the most weight in menswear:

  • Oxford Shoes — The pair side on, polished, standing
  • Polo Shirt — The shirt laid flat, front, collar arranged naturally
  • Suit — Jacket and trousers laid out together, front
  • Tie — The tie laid out straight, full length

On a typical $67 listing, a marketplace charging 20% takes $13, one charging 13.6% takes $9 and one charging 10% takes $7. WishThrift charges neither side, so you keep the whole $67. Listing is free.

Have the trousers already been taken up?

Cloth softened with wear, a little shine starting at the elbows, and a lining that is whole but no longer crisp.
